Four-star EDGE Derek Colman-Brusa ‘loved’ getting coached by Larry Johnson at camp

COLUMBUS – Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson worked out dozens of the top defensive line prospects in the 2026 class at camp this summer.

Some came to Columbus with a scholarship offer from Ohio State while several others earned their offer following a strong camp performance. Four-star Seattle (Wash.) Kennedy Catholic Edge Derek Colman-Brusa was one of the prospects that earned an offer from Ohio State after camp.

Colman-Brusa, the No. 179 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings, liked Larry Johnson’s coaching style and the way he treats his players.

“I loved the way he coached,” Colman-Brusa told Lettermen Row. “He said he would never cuss or yell at a player because he thinks there’s so many better ways to coach someone. I love that he’s a man of God. And I just noticed he really cares about the person more than just the player. I know that if I were to go to Ohio State, Coach Larry Johnson would demand my potential and would demand greatness out of me.”

Colman-Brusa camped at Ohio State on Monday, June 17 but he and his mother decided to get to Columbus a few days early to see campus. 

Ohio State director of player personnel Sam Pettito showed Colman-Brusa around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Sunday, June 16 and he got to sit down with Larry Johnson prior to the camp.

“I got in two days before the actual camp. So that night, I  texted a couple of the coaches that I got there. And then that next morning, Coach Sam Petito, he called my mom and he said, ‘Hey, why don’t you guys just come down, Coach Johnson wants to meet you in person’.”

“So that morning, we went over to the facility, I got to meet Coach LJ, got to meet some of the staff and it was overall a very welcoming experience. I spent about 30 minutes in Coach Johnson’s office, just talking and he was excited I was there. Just kind of talking about the program and the development process.”

Colman-Brusa also told Lettermen Row that he got to talk to current Ohio State defensive lineman and fellow Seattle native J.T. Tuimoloau on his two-visit to Columbus.
