Four-star DL Joseph Jonah-Ajonye on first Georgia visit: ‘I loved it there’
The relationship between Georgia and four-star defensive lineman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye (Oak Ridge; Conroe, Tex.) has shifted into over drive of late. The Bulldogs extended an offered him last month and he quickly lined up his first visit to Athens for approximately a month later.
Jonah-Ajonye called UGA his “dream school” soon after getting that offer. He had high expectations coming into trip but Kirby Smart and company were able to exceed those.
“It was way better than what I expected,” Jonah-Ajonye told DawgsHQ. “I loved it there. It was really fun. I learned a lot. So me and Coach (Tray) Scott, we watched film and he taught me a lot about my position that I didn’t even know in just a couple of minutes. I felt like a better football player than I was already. So just imagine what three or four years would be if I went to Georgia. So that’s why I really loved it.”
Hanging out with recent Georgia commitment Dylan Raiola, the nation’s top quarterback and overall prospect per the On3 Industry Ranking, was another highlight of the trip. Jonah-Ajonye says the two had a lengthy conversation about Raiola chose the Bulldogs over quite a few other programs.
Then there was the food. The talented defender told DawgsHQ that he couldn’t make himself stop eating. He weighed in at 255 pounds when he arrived and he jokingly estimated that he was tipping the scales at 275 pounds on Sunday.
All of those things combined to boost Georgia up the four-star lineman’s list.
“Shoot, they’re really high,” Jonah-Ajonye said. “They’re super high up there, let me just say that.”
The Bulldogs have big plans for the nation’s No. 112 overall prospect if they’re able to get him on campus. Jonah-Ajonye says they pitched him on the idea of playing nine, five, four, and three techniques along the defensive front.
Scott, who likes the way Jonah-Ajonye uses his hands, and Kirby Smart, who is bigger on his motor and explosiveness, want to use him outside of the tight end, inside of the tight end, and even at defensive tackle.
They’re battling a number of schools to get him in the fold. Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, and Oregon are all in the mix. He has official visits set up to Texas Tech on June 9 and Oklahoma on June 16.
After visiting Georgia, he now has a return trip set up to Athens for June 23. That will be an official visit. Once the dust has settled on those weekend trips, Jonah-Ajonye plans to take a month to figure things out. He’ll commit near the start of his senior season.
“I’m gonna commit in August” he said. “August 1 is when I plan on committing. So after I take all of my OVs, I probably should have my mind made up by then.”
