Former LSU WRs set new NFL season records for college program

Former LSU wide receivers have added another major résumé point to the program’s case as “WRU.”

Another big Sunday by Tigers alumni in the NFL pushed their combined receiving totals in yardage and touchdowns past 6,000 yards for the season — the most ever by representatives from one college program.

Seven receivers who played their entire college careers at LSU have now accounted for 6,003 receiving yards this NFL season, topping the previous-best 5,798 by former Miami receivers in 1995.

Those Tigers’ 44 receiving touchdowns also broke the program’s own record of 38 in 2021.

All NFL teams have another game this weekend to complete the regular season.

Ja’Marr Chase has led the way — in every sense of the word — with his 1,612 yards and 16 touchdowns on 117 catches. The Cincinnati Bengals star, out of Archbishop Rummel, leads the league in all three categories.

Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson, a Destrehan product, is second in the NFL to his 2019 national championship teammate with 1,479 yards and 10 touchdowns on 100 receptions.

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Brian Thomas Jr., who prepped at Walker High, has caught 80 passes for 1,179 yards and 10 scores.

All three players are in the top four in the league in yardage, top five in touchdowns and top 15 in receptions.

Rookie Malik Nabers, out of Comeaux and Southside, is in the top 10 in the league with 1,140 yards (No. 7) on 104 catches (No. 3), despite the New York Giants’ tough season overall, and has scored six times (tied for No. 28).

And former Westgate star Kayshon Boutte has caught 36 passes for 472 yards and two touchdowns.

Those five players alone have combined for enough to surpass the Hurricanes’ long-standing mark.

Odell Beckham Jr., Terrace Marshall Jr. and D.J. Chark Jr. have all also chipped a combined 15 catches for 121 yards into the Tigers’ total.

New Orleans Saints tight end Foster Moreau and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire would add another nearly 400 yards when including all positions.

And receiver Trey Palmer, who spent three years in Baton Rouge before finishing college at Nebraska has caught 12 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown.
