Former Florida staffer raves about Gators CB commit Teddy Foster

Former Florida staffer raves about Gators CB commit Teddy Foster

Cardinal Mooney assistant coach Jon Haskins, a former Florida staff member, points to one specific example that shows the competitiveness and work ethic of Teddy Foster. The in-state cornerback committed to the Gators on Friday.

Foster is a dual-sport athlete and plays for his high school basketball team. Last season the Cougars hosted Riverview Sarasota, matching Foster up against Ole Miss commit Jason Jackson.

On the morning of the game, Foster was pulling double duty.

“He’s playing the best basketball player he’s going to face all season that night in front of five different college coaches,” Haskins told Gators Online’s Keith Niebuhr, “and Teddy’s there at 6 a.m. for the early part of our winter conditioning. He’s working out we’re hammering his legs in our load series. He never pushed back. He’s awesome in that way.

“The kid is an absolute coach’s dream. One of the top three players I’ve been around as far as personality and dedication to getting better. He’s a relentless worker. He still has a ton of meat on the bone as far as potential. And I think he thrives with competition, which some kids just don’t. He’s a guy that steps up to the plate.”

Foster and the Cougars defeated Jackson and his team that night, 71-68.

Haskins served as Florida’s director of player personnel under Will Muschamp. He also oversaw player personnel and recruiting for the University of South Florida, the University of Nevada and Stanford University, his alma mater.

Haskins likened Foster’s skillset to a combination of former Florida and FSU defensive backs.

“You are getting a player with the character, drive and focus of a Todd Johnson with the frame, tools and potential of a Jalen Ramsey,” Haskins said of the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Foster. “He understands concepts even though he just started playing the middle of his sophomore year.

“He’s got such length. We obviously had good guys at Florida. The guys when I was there were JC Jackson and Vernon Hargreaves III. Vernon had a weirdly unique body, but he didn’t have anywhere the length (Foster has). Vernon was a 5-foot-11 guy with good length.”

Haskins expects Foster to thrive at Florida, especially under the tutelage of secondary coach Corey Raymond. They were NFL teammates in 1998 with the San Diego Chargers.

“Corey was at the end of his career. I had just been drafted there and I made the team,” Haskins said. “I know Corey and he’s a great guy. Really excited about him. Obviously, his resume, if you don’t know him, speaks for itself. He’s had a lot of success and knows what he’s looking for.

“We asked the coaches to come and check out our guys. They worked both out and offered them (also Chris McCorkle). If you talk around in the college business, people have an immense amount of respect for Corey and his evaluations. …. Teddy is a sponge for getting better and when you get around guys like Corey, coaches at that level who are at really good programs with other guys, he’s going to prosper.”
