For Mitchell Nothing Has Changed On the Field

For Mitchell Nothing Has Changed On the Field

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – To say that Davon Mitchell‘s life has undergone some changes in the last year would be an understatement. In the matter of the last 10 months he’s gone from a 2025 prospect from Allen Texas to a 2024 tight end who plans to graduate early in Los Alamitos, Calif. In that time he’s also made his commitment to Oklahoma.

But as many things that have changed for the elite tight end, on the field, the more things stay the same.

On Thursday night in Orange County the Sooners pledge helped his Los Alamitos team to a 49-10 win over Fountain Valley. On his way there he helped the Griffins with three catches for roughly 80 yards. The most notable moment of the night was probably his 60-yard catch on a quick screen to the flats where he broke a tackle and then sprinted to the end zone for a score.

It was at that moment that the game truly broke open.

Mitchell is a Unique Future Talent for Sooners

Mitchell, at 6-foot-4 and 230-pounds showed off surprising speed and some surprising lateral quickness. Along with that on all of his catches, and particularly on one that was called back on a penalty, he catches the ball so naturally and never shows signs of a double-catch. In short, he is a player whose ability as a receiver is just impossible to ignore.

Speaking of the catch that was called back, it was a moment that like the touchdown, showed why he’s not just a talented tight end but one with a unique skillset. On the play Mitchell ran a go route and a high throw allowed him to slow and go up to get a ball above his head. He identifies the ball and at full speed turns and gets control of the ball over a defender. That sort of body control at his size is just uncommon.

But when it comes to more traditional tight end duties, Mitchell is more than capable. On the first snap of the game the future Sooners tight end pulled from the right tackle around to the left side and simply drove a defender into the ground. Time and time again on the night when he got attached to a defender he kept his man headed in the wrong direction.

NOTES:

*Another Los Alamitos power five commitment that really shined was Kamar Mothudi. Though he wasn’t available in the first half in the second half he wasted no time announcing his presence. On two plays within the same series Mothudi delivered jaw-dropping, and rattling, hits. Though he looks a bit upright when you watch him change direction it’s very fluid and he’s more than capable of moving sideline to sideline.

*Big tackle Maki Stewart is a powerful run blocker that stood out all night leading his team’s ground game. He’s a solid athlete who provides some versatility in his future collegiate position.

*Safety Foster Slaughter is a player that mixes good size with a strong understanding. Los Alamitos dominated the action but whenever anything did slide past the front seven he did a great job limiting the play from becoming a truly crippling moment. He’s a sound tackler in space and showed some good feel when Fountain Valley would try and attack down the middle.
