Florida State vs. Georgia Tech: Offensive player projections for college football season opener

DJ Uiagalelei is back in the ACC after spending last season at Oregon State, and he’ll get his first shot at leading Mike Norvell’s offense on Saturday. He’s coming off a solid season in Corvallis in 2023, throwing for 2,638 yards and 21 touchdowns before transferring to FSU.

Haynes King, QB, Georgia Tech

Haynes King put together a strong debut season at Georgia Tech last year, throwing for 2,842 yards and 27 touchdowns. His projection for the 2024 opener is set as 193.5 pass yards, according to PrizePicks, as he looks to take a leap forward this season in Year 2 under Brent Key.

Malik Benson, WR, Florida State

Florida State lost some big-time receiver production after last season, and Malik Benson is looking to provide a jolt after transferring in from Alabama. He totaled 162.5 receiving yards as a true freshman in 2023 and could be in line for a big role for the Seminoles this year.

Roydell Williams, RB, Florida State

Roydell Williams was Alabama’s second-leading rusher as a senior last season, but will now get some looks in the Florida State backfield after Trey Benson headed to the NFL. Williams rushed for 560 yards and five touchdowns last season, and the projection for his Florida State debut is set at 67.5 rush yards.

Jamal Haynes, RB, Georgia Tech

Another key Georgia Tech playmaker back in the fold, Jamal Haynes had a breakout year in the Yellow Jackets’ backfield in 2023. He totaled 1,059 rushing yards to go with 151 receiving yards, which shows how he’s used in multiple ways in the offense.

Lawrance Toafili, RB, Florida State

Finishing behind Trey Benson in rushing yards last year, Lawrance Toafili is one of the players Florida State is likely to lean on in the backfield in 2024. He finished with 463 rush yards in 2023 after totaling 457 in 2022, showing his consistency for the Seminoles heading into his redshirt senior campaign.

Malik Rutherford, WR, Georgia Tech

Receptions: 3.5

Another key target for Haynes King, Malik Rutherford finished second in Georgia Tech receptions and receiving yards last year only behind Eric Singleton. He had 46 catches for 502 yards to go with four touchdowns in 2023, and his return gives King his top two targets back for another year in Atlanta.

Ja’Khi Douglas, WR, Florida State

Ja’Khi Douglas finished fifth on the Florida State roster with 243 receiving yards in 2023, but has the most returning production in the room. That could potentially set him up for more work with three departures to the NFL, and his projection for the season opener is set at 36.5, according to PrizePicks.
