Florida safety Gregory Smith to enter transfer portal

Florida safety Gregory Smith to enter transfer portal

Florida Gators safety Gregory Smith plans to enter the transfer portal, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett. Smith, a rising redshirt freshman from Riverview (Fla.) Sumner, saw action in five games last season.

He recorded five tackles (three solo) and a pass break-up. Per Smith’s official bio at FloridaGators.com, this was his game breakdown during his true freshman season:

vs. Samford: Made first collegiate appearance at DB recording one tackle and a pass break-up.

vs Kentucky: Made SEC debut at DB.

at No. 5 Texas: Played fifteen snaps on defense at safety.

at Florida State: Saw action at safety where he played 49 snaps recording three tackles (two solo).

Gasparilla Bowl vs. Tulane: Saw action on defense notching one solo tackle.

It is unclear why Smith plans to enter the portal.

He got Florida’s attention in high school thanks to a productive senior season. Smith also played quarterback at Sumner, but the Gators fell in love with his athleticism and believed he could be a standout at defensive back. Then, he had a promising true freshman season and it was believed he had the potential to earn even more playing time this year.

Last December, Florida signed two elite safeties — Hylton Stubbs and Lagonza Hayward. The position was considered a priority during the 2025 recruiting cycle. Both of those players are early enrollees taking part in spring camp.
