‘Florida is a very, very great fit’ for top-100 EDGE Jamonta Waller

‘Florida is a very, very great fit’ for top-100 EDGE Jamonta Waller

GAINESVILLE, Fla — The Gators already have one recruit from Mississippi in their No. 3-ranked 2024 class, and Jamonta Waller could be the second. The four-star EDGE and top-100 overall prospect from Picayune officially visited Florida this weekend along with UF running back commit Kahnen Daniels, who is from West Point.

The Mississippi products are friends, and Daniels had already been recruiting Waller to Gainesville ahead of their trip together.

“It’s great,” Waller said of their relationship. “He stays on me, telling me come home. KD, he’s a real one. He’s going to make sure that he pushes me.”

Other class members and Florida staff members pushed for Jamonta Waller this weekend, with UF coach Billy Napier, defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong and EDGE coach Mike Peterson leading the charge.

“They made sure to let it be known that I’m the top priority,” Waller said. “I want to know how can they use me, so by seeing all that, that’s pretty good. Just getting to the passer, getting off the edge and the get-off. It’s great. They do so much on third down. They can change it up at any time. And I’m a versatile player, so I think I fit great.

“They do so much on defense and the bigger picture is the NFL for me. So, to show scouts that I can do so much, I feel like Florida is a very, very great fit for that. … All the coaches, you know, just the people here. Everybody’s got great facilities and staff. It’s just the people to be around. Everybody’s smiling, happy, having great vibes. It was a great OV.”

The Gators landed four commitments from official visitors on Saturday. Waller was eating at Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille when three recruits announced their decisions during dinner at the restaurant.

“It was cool to see all the guys,” he said. “Because when we’re kids, that’s the main thing that we want:  to grow up and be something. So, just to see those guys do their thing and get where they want to be, that’s pretty cool. And I’m not too much far behind.”

Waller plans to announce his commitment on Aug. 26, his birthday. His finalists are Auburn, Florida and Penn State.

The Gators received his last official visit.

“They’re up there,” Waller said. “It’s kind of hard to say because I’m still thinking it through, but they’re up there.”
