Florida Gators commit Jamonta Waller: ‘There’s no other place I want to be’
Prospects cannot sign their letter of intent until December at the earliest, but for Jamonta Waller, it’s safe to say recruiting is now an afterthought.
Waller, a four-star linebacker from Picayune (Miss.) High, announced his commitment to Florida in June and has not looked back.
“First game in the Swamp, man. It was a great atmosphere and the Swamp was crazy tonight. There’s no other place I want to be,” Waller told Gators Online.
When dissecting Waller’s highlights, it does not take long to notice his positional versatility.
Billy Napier’s staff is recruiting him to play the JACK, which is an edge defender, but you could realistically line him up at numerous positions. There are plenty of options here with the productive senior.
According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Waller is the No. 7-ranked linebacker and No. 64-ranked prospect regardless of position.
“The defense is simple; just run and hit,” Waller said. “Coach Armstrong has things going, man. It’s only up from here.”
Being a native of Mississippi, Waller says another major highlight was having face time with the staff. Today marked his third trip to the Swamp this calendar year, so you can never have enough of those face-to-face conversations.
“It was great,” Waller said. “Every time I come back, it feels like family. It was a great time to come back and see everyone. Everyone was smiling and it was just a great time.”
Waller is solid with UF despite being a priority for other programs
Additional schools that played host during the month of June were Auburn and Ole Miss.
In addition to the aforementioned schools, Waller possesses offers from Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Oregon, Texas A&M and Florida State among others.
With a boatload of options still on the table, what makes Florida the no-brainer choice?
“It just felt like home. The coaches felt like family,” said Waller. “Every time I came back, they made me feel like a top priority. Coach Armstrong recruited me at two other schools, so that showed a lot too.”
If all goes as planned, Waller will be returning to the Swamp later in the season for the FSU game.
As for other programs, the 2024 prospect is unsure if he will take additional visits.
The recruiting cap is on tight
Plenty of high-profile uncommitted prospects were present inside the Swamp as well.
Those included Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland defenders LJ McCray and Zay Mincey, and 2025 No. 1-ranked safety DJ Pickett.
“So, we had some guys here today and we got some things going to roll in. It’s going to wake a lot of people back up. You guys just have to keep your eyes open.”
