Five things: Kansas State conference schedule takeaways

Five things: Kansas State conference schedule takeaways

1.) Two items collide for the first bullet point. After an announcement from the Big 12, Kansas State knows what their basketball conference schedule will look like now that there is 14 teams in the league. The additions of Houston, UCF, BYU and Cincinnati make it so that the Wildcats will no longer see every team in the Big 12 twice. For the first time as conference foes, K-State will travel to BYU, Houston and Cincinnati during the basketball season.

2.) Unfortunately, just like in football, Kansas State will not host Texas during their last season in the Big 12. Quite frankly, that is a mistake by the league to have one of their members not host the Longhorns in either one of the two major sports. The best chance the Wildcats will have, aside from that matchup in Austin, is to face Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. For basketball, the closest thing resembling a home game would be to host the Longhorns in the Big 12 basketball tournament at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.

3.) My third takeaway is that K-State has one of the tougher slates in regards to who their road-only matchups are with in the Big 12. Jerome Tang and his squad will only play Cincinnati, Houston, Texas and Texas Tech one time and as an away game.

4.) Despite some bad fortune on the road-only contests within the league, Kansas State received exactly what they wanted in terms of who they will be playing twice this year. Though tough matchups, they wanted to maintain the rivalries and play each of Kansas and Iowa State two times. That will happen for the 2023-2024 season. The other three opponents they will see twice are BYU, Oklahoma State and West Virginia, which is pretty solid for competitive purposes. Neither one of the three are expected to be contenders near the top of the conference.

5.) Remember all of those quad one games from a year ago? It will likely be the case once again for K-State. Playing Iowa State and Kansas twice, traveling to Houston, Texas, Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Texas Tech and hosting Baylor and TCU likely ensures that. That’s at least 1 alone, with others possible and not also including non-conference matchups versus Villanova, LSU, USC, Providence and Miami or Georgia that will or could also qualify.
