Five things: Jerome Tang signs contract extension with Kansas State

Five things: Jerome Tang signs contract extension with Kansas State

1.) Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang has signed a contract extension that will keep him in Manhattan through the 2029-2030 season. It was something that had been in the works for the entire offseason and was announced by the school on the first day of practice for this upcoming season. He now has seven years left on his agreement, and every action from him shows a genuine interest and insistence to not only remain at K-State but to win a national championship.

2.) Unsurprisingly, it also involves a lofty raise for the Kansas State basketball boss. Tang will earn $3 million this year, with his yearly salary increasing by $100,000 with each season. That will bring the base to $3.6 million in the final year of the deal. His previous contract consisted of a yearly salary of less than $2 million. There are also four retention bonuses of $200,000 included within the deal.

3.) The buyout in Tang’s new contract with K-State is not expected to be hefty. It starts at $6 million and lessens by a million with each year. Though that can be used as a security blanket for a school in the case of a coach choosing to leave for another job, it has not been a standard operating procedure for Kansas State Athletics Director Gene Taylor in any negotiation. It may be another sign of trust that forms a good working relationship between he and his coaches. He worked for Gary Barta at Iowa who was known for negotiating large buyouts.

4.) Not that there was a struggle on the recruiting trail, but it can’t hurt. Tang and K-State have been clicking on all cylinders. They have elevated the recruiting success of the program to soaring heights, and more longevity and security could be used to reel in some bigger fish. This comes on the heels of landing a sensational transfer class of Arthur Kaluma, Tylor Perry, Ques Glover and Will McNair.

5.) It is also just continued momentum for a Kansas State program clearly on the rise. They probably aren’t receiving enough attention for this season at this point. I know I wouldn’t bet against them. Not only was it a strong transfer class, the three high schoolers have some juice to them as well. That doesn’t even consider the returns of Cam Carter, David N’Guessan and Nae’Qwan Tomlin, who also played considerable roles on a team that advanced to the Elite Eight in Tang’s first season in Manhattan. Ticket sales were already sky high, but an added layer of loyalty could also be another boost.
