Five Takaways: Justin Williams conversation

Five Takaways: Justin Williams conversation

The Woodlands, Texas – On3 Industry Ranking 4-star Justin Williams has been a top linebacker target for the Texas Longhorns in the 2024 class for over a year.

The 6-foot-2, near 210-pound explosive playmaker has been a Oregon lean since almost committing following a visit for the Ducks game against UCLA during the season.

Since that time, he has been to Oregon at least two more times. Williams has strong connections to the Oregon staff, including a former Oak Ridge High assistant coach now on staff in Eugene.

Williams will be making an unofficial visit to Georgia May 20-21 along with 4-star teammate Joseph Jonah-Ajonye after the linebacker made an unofficial visit to Alabama earlier this spring. The Georgia visit coupled with the Alabama visit has cut into Oregon’s once sizable advantage.

The Texas Longhorns are one of four teams Williams mentioned Tuesday as likely to receive a June official visit prior to a decision before the 2023 season begins.

Here are five takeaways from my conversation with Williams Tuesday.

Five Takeaways

Williams admits that communication through the recruiting process has been a struggle at times for him. He’s learning, and improving in that regard. He’s looking to find someone and a school that is comfortable, and not a school that people think will be comfortable. That is what he has found the most the most helpful.

He likes Coach Sarkisian, saying “He’s cool.”. He said Texas has a great program, but has to see if it’s his vibe. Texas is recruiting Williams as a MIKE backer that can play outside too. He said he prefers MIKE backer long term.

Williams said he has been to Oregon four or five times now after the late April unofficial. Oregon remains a “family atmosphere”. The Ducks are recruiting him as a MIKE ‘backer.

Williams will be accompanied on the Georgia unofficial visit next weekend by his brother. The visit to Georgia will be key to see if they fit his playing style, how they are as a team, how they treat each other and how exactly they develop their players. Williams attended a Georgia Bulldogs camp after his freshman season.

An in-state school would have to show that they can develop him better than the out of state schools he’s strongly considering. Williams is after that “wow” factor that ties it all together. He said Tuesday he hasn’t got that wow factor from a school in Texas yet. The “wow” factor is coaches that know how to tough love and consistent, player development and the family atmosphere.

Likely official visits

Oregon in June for sure. Williams wants to official visit Georgia, and he “probably might take one” to Texas. Alabama is another possible to likely June official visit. He plans to release official visits after school gets out.

When Williams sits down at a table to make his decision, the people that are most important in that decision are his mom, dad and brothers.
