Five-Star Plus+ CB Devin Sanchez is ‘very locked in’ with Ohio State

NASHVILLE – Ohio State cornerbacks coach Tim Walton made Five-Star Plus+ Houston (Texas) North Shore cornerback Devin Sanchez a priority early in his recruitment and it resulted in Sanchez committing to the Buckeyes back on Jan. 6 at the All-American Bowl.

Sanchez, the No. 5 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking, chose Ohio State over offers from several Power Four Programs including LSU, Texas and Texas A&M. All three programs have continued to recruit Sanchez since his commitment to Ohio State but he is set on being a Buckeye.

“I’m very locked in. I think they should put very hard commitment next to my name, because I’m not gonna be flipped in no time soon,” Sanchez told Lettermen Row at the 2024 On3 Elite Series. “I think I’m probably one of the top guys that people don’t have to worry about flipping. I’m a guy Ohio State doesn’t have to, ‘Oh, they got to worry about me’ or ‘Oh, they gotta find my replacement’. No, it’s just not like that.”

As for why Sanchez is so locked into his commitment, he has close relationships with multiple members of the Ohio State coaching staff and trusts their ability to develop him for the next level.

“I mean, it’s really just you know, the developmental part and, you know, the relationship that I have that I built with coach Walton, coach DuHart, coach Day and coach Knowles, really the whole defensive staff. Even coach Hartline, the wide receivers coach. It’s just coming in and competing, I don’t think there’s a place I can get to develop better than Ohio State. Going against guys like Jeremiah every day is gonna make us better. You see what he did this spring. So I mean, he’s a true freshman going against guys that are seasoned, Davison Igbinosun and Denzel Burke, those guys are seasoned, they’ve been in the fire and then he’s just coming in from the jump and just doing what he does. So I mean, that’s just something I want to be a part of.”

Sanchez is especially close with the aforementioned Tim Walton who he sees as another father-figure.

“He ‘s really like my dad, I would say, they really love football and he knows what he’s talking about. So, I mean, just the relationship that we have is it just clicked from the jump and I’ve been out there like six times now so it’s just every time I go the relationship is stronger. Now when we talk on the phone, it’s not just all about football it’s  about other things, you know, outside of football, outside of life. ‘What are you going to be when you when you get older in five years’, it’s conversations like that and you don’t really have that many conversation with coaches that are colleges it’s really just have ‘Oh, what you’re gonna do when you get here’ or ‘You’re gonna do this when you get here’. We have a different type of conversation.”

Since his commitment, Sanchez has shifted his focus to recruiting for Ohio State and Five-Star Plus+ wide receiver Dakorien Moore out of Duncanville (Texas) is his top target.

“I mean, that’s really like the top of my list. And then, you know, he’s just a great receiver all around. I’ve been playing him for three years now, the past three years now in the State Championship. I mean, guarding him is very fun. It’s not a hate relationship, it’s a love relationship, you know, just getting better, making each other better. The end goal is 1. Go to college ad 2. Go to the league. So, I mean, that’s both of our goals. He’s just one guy that I want to go against every day and practice with and we already have that relationship, just because we go to rival Schools in Texas. I mean, we already have that relationship, so why not come to Ohio?”

Sanchez is also trying to get five-star Conroe (Texas) cornerback Dorian Brew to join him in Columbus.

“I feel like Dorian can be a great asset to what we can do. He can play corner and he can also play safety just because of how big he is and how well he moves. So, I mean, we have a great relationship, we got the same trainer down to Houston so I’m always working with him. And then I’m cool with them. So like, I’m telling them every time, like, come on and we just had Blake Woodby decommit so we got an open spot. I mean, come jum in it and let’s make history because let me let’s bring BIA back. Like they say, me, Na’eem and then the guys up there right now. You got Caleb Downs and Jermaine Matthews, those guys still gonna be there. So I mean, let’s bring BIA back.”

Sanchez measured in at an impressive 6-foot-2 with a wingspan of 6-foot-5.25. Both he and fellow Five-Star Plus+ Ohio State cornerback commit Na’eem Offord caught the attention of On3 Director of Scouting Charles Power at check-in for the 2024 On3 Elite Series.
