Five-star commit is locked-in with Alabama

Jaylen Mbakwe, five-star cornerback from Clay-Chalkville High School in Alabama, committed to Alabama last July. He has considered himself a solid commitment throughout the last 11 months, but has taken a few visits including an official to Auburn earlier this month. Mbakwe returned to Tuscaloosa for an official visit, and he has changed his perspective on other programs.
“No more trips,” he said after the official visit. “The only two (official) visits I had were Alabama and Auburn, but this place is home. I want to compete against the best every day and get coached by the best.”
Mbakwe’s visit started a little bit later than the other official visitors (Don’t miss the post-official visit nuggets) since he was competing with his high school team in the 7-on-7 tournament held at Alabama on Saturday. He drew some praise from Nick Saban after staring at quarterback during the event.

He is currently expected to lead the offense for the Cougars this fall, but he will focus completely at cornerback once he arrives at Alabama in January. He noted the conversations with Coach Saban and Travaris Robinson were more about, “checking in with each other.”
There wasn’t anything different Mbakwe learned about Alabama during the official visit. He has been to campus and visited with the coaches many times. He already feels like part of the team. His entire family including his mom, dad, sisters and brother also joined him on the visit.
Mbawke is close friends with several Alabama players including Kool Aid McKinstry (player host), and also a few commitments such as Jeremiah Beaman and Sterling Dixon. All three were in Tuscaloosa helping recruit others to Alabama. Mbakwe mentioned Demarcus Riddick and Daniel Hill as two guys he spent time recruiting during the visit.
“He (McKinstry) told me just to be me,” the state’s top recruit said regarding how he should prepare for life at the Capstone. “He said to have an attitude that nobody else has and outwork everyone.”

The visit included a lot of the same information Mbakwe has seen on previous visits. He had an academic tour with plans to major Sports Management. He had exceptional food which included brunch at Coach Saban’s house on Sunday morning.
Mbakwe said the best part of the visit was the time spent at Coach Saban’s, and also hanging out with the other players. Brunch may have been great, but the best meal happened on Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The menu included lobster tails, wings and shrimp alfredo.
Mbawke has shut down the recruiting process. He is focused on this season at Clay-Chalkville, and also his future in Tuscaloosa. He will return to Alabama for another unofficial visit on Friday where he will help recruit several top players who are taking official visits on the last official visit weekend (updated list) of the summer.
“We have some big things brewing,” Mbakwe concluded.
