First-Round NFL Draft Picks: PAC-12 Since 2012

First-Round NFL Draft Picks: PAC-12 Since 2012

Pac-12 schools are not all created equal when it comes to producing first-round NFL draft picks. In the decade since Colorado and Utah joined the conference, the conference has produced 48 first-rounders as a whole, with some colleges like USC producing far more than others.

While no Pac-12 school has produced double-digit first-round picks in the last decade, the top two schools have produced nine and the bottom two have produced zero. Surprisingly, two Pac-12 schools have also produced first overall picks. Both were quarterbacks in Andrew Luck.

USC has an 88-48 record since 2012, the Trojans finished ranked at the end of seven of those seasons, won a Rose Bowl in 2016, lost the 2018 and 2022 Cotton Bowls and fired three coaches. During this extremely underwhelming period of USC football, the Trojans played in eight postseason bowl games, winning just three.

First-Round NFL Draft Picks (2012-2023)

Despite the significant struggles of the USC football program the past five years, the Trojans still had more First-Round NFL Picks than any other school in the Pac-12. Although Oregon and Washington were just one behind, the perception among many is Oregon has blown USC away in this regard.

Even during arguably the worst stretch of USC football ever, 2017-2021, USC among the conference leaders in NFL Draft Picks. The Trojans had five more players drafted than Oregon from 2017 to 2021. Washington and Utah were the conference’s best.

NFL Draft Value (2011-2021)

This is based on the performances of the draft picks from each school performed while in the NFL. The table below is what 2,803 NFL draft picks look like, by school, from the perspective of the Fitzgerald-Spielberger chart. In total, 237 college programs (and two draft picks who never played college football) combined for 1,938,664 “draft value points” in just over a decade. This is where NFL draft picks come from.

Just in case anyone’s curious, Washington was at No. 15, Oregon No. 21, UCLA No. 22 and Utah No. 28. We’re obviously leaving out a few years as it pertains our main topic, but it still provides an interesting perspective.
