Expectations for SMU’s tight end addition

The SMU football team is adding 29 players between high school signees and the transfer portal. On the Pony Express will take a look at each newcomer by position.

The Mustangs added depth at tight end with a national champion for offensive coordinator and position coach Casey Woods.

Matthew Hibner, Michigan

Matthew Hibner comes to SMU following three seasons in Ann Arbor. He was primarily used on special teams over his 28 total games, playing at tight end in 16. Hibner was limited by injuries during the 2023 season, but returned for the College Football Playoff semifinal against Alabama and played in the national championship game victory against Washington.

He has two career catches for 15 yards and is more of a blocking tight end.

Expectation

RJ Maryland is the unquestioned starter for the Mustangs with Adam Moore and Tripp Riordan as the young guard. That leaves Hibner to bridge the gap and also do some of the dirty work the position requires.

Maryland has increased his size and improved his blocking, but at 6-foot-5, 254 pounds Hibner provides a different element. Hibner will allow for two tight end sets and versatility in play-calling.
