Everything Paul Mainieri said after South Carolina blew a 10-run lead on Saturday

Following a 15-12 loss to Texas A&M on Saturday, South Carolina head coach Paul Mainieri spoke one-on-one with GamecockCentral. Here’s everything he had to say.

Can you just describe what you’re feeling after a game like that?

“I really can’t. Just brokenhearted for the kids. Played their hearts out. Got a lot of clutch hits as they all pitched well. We had the guys on the mound who were the guys that had been pitching great for us. And got to give credit to (Texas A&M). They got some big hits. It’s hard to win college baseball games.”

How tough has this year been on you?

“I haven’t really thought about it.”

When the 10-run lead continued to dwindle, did you feel any uneasiness or worry in the dugout as the game started slipping away?

“There wasn’t any uneasiness at all. I felt like our players were playing hard and the pitchers were making good pitches, and we made plays.”

What did you see from Brendan Sweeney and Caleb Jones in that ninth inning?

“They put some good swings on some balls.”

Nathan Hall was out of the lineup due to an injury. How do you feel about him moving forward with that?

“Don’t know. He couldn’t run today, so we’ll just have to play it day by day.”

How did you feel about the offensive effort today to score those 12 runs?

“We were one hit away from clinching it, I think. We had the bases loaded, one out in the top of the ninth inning, and couldn’t score. Got to do what it takes. We just came up a bit short.”

I know you guys have a game on Tuesday, but just how hard is it to move on from a game like this and have short-term memory?

“Well, you can’t do anything about yesterday, you know? So you just got to get them ready and go play them play Tuesday.”
