Evansville guard Cam Haffner plans to enter NCAA transfer portal

Evansville guard Cam Haffner plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, a source told On3. He started his college career at Eastern Illinois.

Haffner was a member of the Missouri Valley Conference Most Improved Team this past season after starting all 20 games in which he appeared. He averaged 12.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 45.9% from the field. He also hit 36.7% of his shots from three-point territory.

It was an impressive leap forward for Haffner, who averaged 4.7 points in his first season at Evansville in 2023-24. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Before arriving at Evansville, Haffner started 11 games at Eastern Illinois while appearing in 27 games as a freshman. He averaged 7.5 points and shot 42.7% from three-point territory and earned Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year honors before entering the transfer portal.

The Purple Aces finished 11-21 this past season, including 8-10 in MVC play. They were the No. 10 seed in the conference tournament before falling to Murray State in the first round of Arch Madness.

Cam Haffner played high school basketball at Westfield (Ind.), where he was a three-time All-Conference selection. He also set the school record with 85 three-pointers in a season as a senior.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such asynchronous contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
