For the second time this year, 2025 Lucas (Tex.) Lovejoy wide receiver Daylan McCutcheon traveled to Coral Gables a week ago for an unofficial visit with the Miami Hurricanes.
Many things have changed within the Hurricanes coaching staff since he first visited Miami when he received an offer from former ‘Canes offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, which was one of the key reasons the four-star recruit returned to South Florida on June 1st.
“It was important to me to get back down to Miami and be able to connect with the coaching staff and meet the new receivers coach,” McCutcheon told CaneSport. “I really liked meeting coach (Kevin) Beard. He’s a very interesting person, and I just like how things went down for the second time.”
After meeting Beard for the first time, the 5-foot-11, 170-pounder loved everything he heard and saw from the Hurricanes receivers coach.
“He taught me a lot when I went down there,” McCutcheon said. “He was talking to me about how the game works and just how things roll at Miami, especially for him coming in and spending his first two months there. He told me how things were going and how things will be this upcoming fall.”
Before wrapping up his visit in Miami, McCutcheon, and Beard shared what he called a “deep conversation,” which may have piqued his interest in the Hurricanes more.
“One thing is for sure and that is he is recruiting dudes,” McCutcheon said. “After talking to him, I know I’ll be one of those dudes that he is recruiting.”
According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, McCutcheon is the No. 93 overall prospect in the country, No. 16 wide receiver in the nation, and No. 14 prospect in Texas.
“My recruiting process is going really good, especially during the spring,” McCutcheon said. “When we had spring ball practices, a lot of schools came out to watch me. I’m very blessed to be where I am right now.”
Currently, South Carolina and Oklahoma, which is his sister’s alma mater, are the programs that are standing out the most to the Texas native. The Sooners are currently the favorites to land McCutcheon’s commitment, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.
“My sister went there, (and) I’ve always been there,” McCutcheon previously told On3. “Coach (Emmett) Jones is a really cool dude. He knows his stuff, and I like being able to talk to coach (Jeff) Lebby and coach (Brent) Venables.”
While going through his recruiting process, McCutcheon says academics and development will be his two biggest focuses when looking into a program.
“A school that will help support me academically,” McCutcheon said. “Also somewhere that will be able to help and develop me throughout the years that I’m there playing football and help me make it pro.”
Following his trip to Coral Gables, McCutcheon added that he believes Miami is trending in the right direction after making a great second impression. He says he plans on returning in the fall for a game-day visit as well.
“I view Miami really well; I love them,” McCutcheon said. “They’re one of my favorite schools, and I’ve loved them since I was a kid. By coming on this trip, it just made my interest (in Miami) go higher.”
CaneSport’s take
Seeing McCutcheon make it a priority to return to Coral Gables in order to reconnect with the Hurricanes staff is something Miami fans should love to hear. The talented pass catcher has deep ties to the Hurricanes due to the fact that two of his cousins played at Miami (Dejah Cason in soccer and Krystal Saunders basketball), his father is from South Florida and a lifelong Miami fan, and his high interest in the program make McCutcheon a name to continue to monitor in the 2025 class.
