Dynamic Prep (Tex.) takes down Montverde Academy (Fla.) in Chipotle Nationals opener

Texas basketball powerhouse Dynamic Prep took the first step toward a national championship on Wednesday night, blowing out national juggernaut Montverde Academy (Fla.) 67-52 in the opening game of the Chipotle Nationals.

The Bearcats took their first lead five seconds into the game and never trailed again, jumping out to a 12-8 lead after one quarter. They stretched that into a nine-point advantage at halftime, holding a 29-20 edge going into the break.

Montverde struggled to score from the tip, shooting just 27 percent from the field for the game. Meanwhile, Dynamic’s offense flourished behind senior center Jaden Toombs, who finished the game with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The Bearcats kept Montverde at bay throughout the third quarter, taking a 45-36 advantage going into the final eight minutes. From there, they stretched the lead to as big as 15 in the final few minutes to win their first-ever game at the tournament.

Senior guard JaCobe Coleman chipped in 16 points and four rebounds, while Chris Nwuli (10 points, 10 rebounds) and SMU signee Jermaine O’Neal Jr. (9 points, 6 rebounds) helped the Bearcats dominate on the glass. As a team, Dynamic out rebounded the Eagles 48-34 and also scored 36 points in the paint to Montverde’s 18.

Uncommitted top-100 prospect Dante Allen led Montverde with 16 points on 5/16 shooting, while Creighton signee Hudson Greer added 13 of his own. Indiana signee Trent Sisley and Florida commit CJ Ingram, two other top prospects, were held to a combined 16 points on 6/22 from the field, though. Montverde was also playing its first game without head coach Kevin Boyle, who took a job earlier this month at Ohio’s SPIRE Academy.

He will be replaced beginning next season by Gonzaga College Prep (D.C.) head coach Steve Turner.

Dynamic will now turn its attention to Thursday’s matchup with No. 2 seed Link Academy out of Branson, Missouri.
