The Miami Hurricanes and Duke Blue Devils are in a heated battle in their Group D matchup for seeding in the ACC tournament’s semifinal round. The two are locked up at 4-4. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Miami threatened to break that tie, but Duke’s Gio DiGiacomo came in with a spectacular diving catch to keep the score knotted at four.
Miami outfielder Jacoby Long stepped up to the plate with two outs remaining in the bottom of the inning. There on the opening pitch of his at-bat, Long jumped on a pitch down the middle of the plate, launching it deep into center field. The Blue Devils’ Gio DiGiacomo was able to track down the ball and make this spectacular diving catch. You can check out DiGiacomo’s web gem in the video below.
Since then, both teams have added to their score. Duke tacked on two with a two-run home run by infielder Luke Storm. Unfortunately, Miami did one better in the bottom of the eighth. The Hurricanes hit two home runs of their own. Miami then added another run later at-bat in the inning.
Duke falls late to timely Miami hitting
Duke took a 6-4 lead in the eighth and just had to survive two more innings however, the Miami bats had other plans. Junior infielder, CJ Kayfus, smashed his solo shot into homer over the right-field wall to being the Hurricanes within one. Then, two batters later, Miami third baseman Yohandy Morales tied things up with a solo shot of his own. And with two on and two out, sophomore Renzo Gonzalez delivered with a single up the middle to give Miami the lead, and they never looked back from there.
Miami closer Andrew Walters came in to finish off the Blue Devils. He retired three of the four batters he faced, striking out two in the process. Walters made quick work of the Duke batters, including Alex Stone, who was able to keep his hitting streak going. It now sits at 30 games.
With the loss, the Blue Devils are eliminated from the ACC tournament. They must now head home for the results of selection Monday to see if they make it into the men’s baseball championship tournament; and if they do, who they will be pooled with in the regional round.
Miami will now take on the top-seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the ACC semifinals on Saturday. The game is scheduled to start at 12 PM CT.
