Duke and Virginia Tech official visits resonate with three-star WR Chanz Wiggins

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Chanz Wiggins has been making the most of each weekend this summer.
The On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 94-rated WR in the country out of King George (Va.) High School in Virginia has taken official visits to both Virginia Tech and Duke. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Wiggins is expected to take his final official visit of June this weekend to Maryland.
The Hokies made a strong impression on Wiggins while the big-framed pass-catcher was down in Blacksburg. Brent Pry, Fontel Mines and Tyler Bowen all have played large roles in luring one of Virginia’s best to stay in-state.
“I loved Virginia Tech,” Wiggins told On3. “Coach Mines is my guy, I love him so much.”
“Coach Pry has a vision and I’m envisioning it and trying to see what it’s all about,” he continued on. “My friend, Gabriel Williams, is committed and he’s been on me. Ever since he committed, he’s been working to get me to commit to Virginia Tech.”
After immersing himself in the culture at Virginia Tech earlier this month, Wiggins has new perspective on the Hokies’ program.
“They’ve got a lot of people coming in this year from last year’s class an also my class that I know very well,” he started. “I think I want to be a part of that vision. They’re trying to make Virginia Tech how good it was when Michael Vick was there. That’s important and I want to rebuild that culture. The hard work that’s everyone putting in …
“When I was there, people were coming in and working on routes on air, 7-on-7, improving their skills over the summer when the rest of the students were on breaks,” Wiggins added. “After meeting with Coach Mines, Coach Bowen, and (Shawn) Quinn, they showed me a slideout of the routes they use in practice and how it would translate to the NFL and how I’d develop mentally, physically, and emotionally, become a great person, great husband, great teammate, and a great friend.”
After checking out the Hokies, Wiggins took an official visit to Duke. While in Durham, the Virginia pass-catcher connected well with Blue Devils head coach Mike Elko and Zohn Burden — and so did key members of his family.
“When I was at Duke this past weekend, it was really great seeing Coach (Burden),” Wiggins said. “He was showing me how he can develop me as a player and as a person, and that was good for me. He has a strong connection with my mom and my mom loves Coach Elko. My grandma also loved Coach Elko so much, and then my player-host Jontavios Robertson showed me how it felt to be around college football players and in college football life.”
After checking out the Blue Devils earlier this month, Wiggins is still high on the relationships the Duke coaches forged with him and his family.
“My family is very important. I’m a family-oriented person,” he explained. “If my mom and my family can trust the coaches, then I can trust them as well. My mom has to trust the coaches and she has to let me trust them to develop me as a person.”
Wiggins will head to College Park to see the Terps this weekend for an official visit, and a decision may not be far off after that.
He’s the No. 10-rated recruit from the state of Virginia, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
