Denny Hamlin calls out Austin Dillon, his crew for celebrating ‘like they did something admirable’

Denny Hamlin called out Austin Dillon and the entire No. 3 crew for their celebration following their win at Richmond over the weekend.
While Dillon seemed to be on his way to victory when an untimely caution came out, he decided not to settle for second place after a green-white-checkered restart, bulldozing his way through Joey Logano and clipping Hamlin to stave off the disappointment of defeat.
During the latest episode of his Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin threw some stones at Dillon and his crew, as they decided to celebrate like there was no tomorrow after wrecking Logano and Hamlin for the win over the weekend.
“I’m just thinking, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I mean, you just — that’s a little bit of, that’s what kind of puts a bad taste in other’s mouths at times. You know, at least when I got out of the car, I tried to hear it — think about it from Austin’s perspective. ‘Well, he gets rewarded for it. His season was terrible, and he saw this as a way, this was just the easy way out, and I’m going to take it, and oh well. But yet, these guys were celebrating like they won the World Series, and think that they did something that was admirable. Like, it’s not. That’s the only kind of problem I have with this,” Hamlin said. “Just take the checkered flag and like, you know, suppress it a little but in the media.
“Don’t just say, ‘Ah, well, I didn’t really do anything. It was fine. Just did what I needed to.’ Like, at least have some empathy that you just wrecked two guys to win the race. Like, don’t be doing Tik Tok that you know, you just won the race, and look how great we are. It’s just, that’s just bulls— in my mind.”
Of course, it’s easy to see why Hamlin was frustrated by the entire situation, and seeing the joy Dillon and his crew were feeling after what he believed to be an un-earned win must’ve turned up his anger to an eleven. Evidently, it didn’t subside, even after some time passed between the end of the race and his podcast.
Moving forward, it’ll be fascinating to see how Hamlin and Logano decide to race Dillon, especially if they’re fighting for another win. It certainly wouldn’t be surprising to see some payback dished out over the next couple of months.
Regardless, Austin Dillon won in miraculous fashion, and that’s usually a cause for celebration, but the manner in which he did so drew the ire of Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano and many others in the NASCAR world.
