Defense: Biggest question facing each position

Defense: Biggest question facing each position

Anticipation percolates as Ryan Walters’ chugs to the start of his first season as Purdue coach. There is plenty to like, but questions loom for each position group. A look at a question facing each position on the Boilermaker defense.

End: Will the transfers deliver the goods?

The new staff hit the portal hard to upgrade this spot, landing three SEC players: Malik Langham, Isaiah Nichols and Jeffrey M’Ba, who is considered to be the best of the bunch. This trio has enhanced the size of the front. Now, can they anchor, get a push and stuff the run? They will augment a unit that has two veteran anchors in Joe Anderson and Prince Boyd. And is Joe Strickland ready to step up?

Nose tackle: Can this spot be a position of strength?

The Boilermakers appear well-fortified with Cole Brevard, Damarjhe Lewis and Mo Omonode all able. And could freshman Jamarrion Harkless help?

Inside linebacker: Are there any difference-makers?

That player may be OC Brothers, who needs to become a playmaker from his “cylinder” spot. Purdue also will look to Clyde Washington, who will play the WILL position. After that? Things are a bit murky. Is Yanni Karlaftis ready for more? What about Domanick Moon?

Outside linebacker: Is this position as good as advertised?

Some feel it will be the strongest spot on the team with anchors like Nic Caraway, Khordae Sydnor and Kydran Jenkins, who also could help at ILB. It’s now or never for Scotty Humpich. And, keep an eye on Roman Pitre.

Cornerback: How quickly will this position develop?

No position on the roster has undergone a bigger change, as the staff imported four portal corners along with a JC transfer.

Penn State’s Marquis Wilson is the best. He’ll start. It’ll be interesting to see what Ole Miss transfers Braxton Myers and Markevious Brown bring. Brown looks like a cut above. Stanford’s Salim Turner-Muhammad should play a key role. Will JC Botros Alisandro help? The only key vet back is Jamari Brown.

Safety: Will Cam Allen go out with a bang?
No player on the roster can rival Allen’s experience of 31 starts. But, the fifth-year senior still has been prone to breakdowns. This defense needs Allen to be a steady last line of defense.

Running mate Sanoussi Kane is a trusted leader, while Antonio Stevens is another veteran who needs to play a key role. Keep an eye on true freshman Dillon Thieneman, who looks poised for big things. What does Arkansas transfer Anthony Brown bring?
