Deep Dive: Purdue training camp practice No. 12

It’s informative, it’s analytical, it’s opinionated, it’s the Deep Dive, a look at today’s football practice. Purdue worked out in Ross-Ade Stadium on a hot August day. Perfect camp weather!

• After doing post-practice media, Dillon Thieneman went back on the field to do more work after almost everyone else had scattered. This is a common scene. The loneliness of the All-American.

Dillon Thieneman’s work is never done.

• A big new name was missing today: projected No. 1 WR Jahmal Edrine. Told he was given a “vet” day. He’s earned it. Another new name also out today: DL Spider Dinkins, who had his right arm in a sling. Told it’s nothing serious, out a couple days. ILB Owen Davis was another new name out.

Still missing today: CB Nyland Green, DB Kyndrich Breedlove, OL Joey Tanona, WR CJ Smith, WR Kam Brown, DL Joe Anderson, OL Rod Green, WR Jayden Dixon-Veal, OT Corey Stewart, TE George Burhenn, S Anthony Brown, OT Joshua Sales, NT Cole Brevard, DL Drake Carlson, DB Salim Turner-Muhammad and S Koy Beasley and OL John Randle, who went down in a heap during 11-on-11 work on Tuesday.

ILB Winston Berglund was still in red but working out with the squad. Actually saw DL Joe Anderson, who I don’t believe I had seen yet in August. He watched.

• So, today, the WR unit was minus: Edrine, Smith and Dixon-Veal, arguably its three top targets. And Kam Brown has been out all camp. The OL is also thin sans Stewart, Sales, Tanona, Green, Randle and Bouldin.

• Special teams did work on kickoffs today. Spencer Porath, Ben Freehill and RJ Lopez took turns putting toe to leather. Eight were touchbacks. Freehill was the most impressive in terms of hang, location and distance.

Back deep on returns: Thieneman, Markevious Brown, Devin Mockobee, Reggie Love, Elijah Jackson, Duda Rogers and Leland Smith.

Ryan Browne has been coming out pretty consistently as the No. 2 QB. So, he could be the guy behind Hudson Card. Browne had a nice long TD pass today to Smith, who is a specimen.

• DC Kevin Kane was hacked off early about some penalties. He let it be known.

• Lots of NFL scouts today: Eagles, Cowboys, Panthers, Cardinals, Lions.

• Nice to see former Purdue WR Lance Schieb! One of the good guys from the 1980s. He watched practice with former roommate and teammate Ted Gelov, a Purdue WR, too. They combined for 11 catches and three TDs vs. Pitt in 1986. (Lance had the TDs). Schieb had 23 career catches, and six went for TDs!

• Nice to catch up with former West Lafayette High QB Kyle Adams, who is in grad school after a run taking snaps for Purdue. Adams is a smart young man with a bright future. Former Red Devils at practice everywhere today!

• Lots of heavyweights on hand: AD Mike Bobinski and John Purdue Club boss man Tim House. Spied former Purdue administrator, Boiler star, NFL vet Calvin Williams, who is 57 and looks like he still could play. People forget how good this man was. I don’t. I watched No. 88. He made 308 career NFL catches.

• Ops honcho Pete Roley is the hardest working man in town!

• ST coach Chris Petrilli brought the mojo–as usual. If there’s a lack of attention to detail or energy, he sets the time and example and has his ST boys rally around that. As Petrilli likes to say: If I am juiceless, I am useless!
