Decision Day for On300 QB Husan Longstreet
It’s decision day for Corona (Calif.) Centennial On300 quarterback Husan Longstreet, who will announce his destination at 5pm EST. Sources continued to indicate on Saturday afternoon that the four-star Longstreet was torn on his decision between a couple SEC programs.
Auburn and Texas A&M are considered the front runners. Ole Miss and Oregon received late visits as well. The On3 Industry Ranking tabs the 6-foot 1/2, 185-pound Longstreet as the nation’s No. 6 quarterback and No. 51 prospect overall.
As a junior Longstreet passed for 3,013 yards and 24 touchdowns with another 645 yards on the ground and seven more scores.
Texas A&M is the On3 RPM Favorite
Longstreet visited with head coach Mike Elko and Texas A&M program the first weekend of February and returned again the weekend of March 30. Offensive coordinator Collin Klein has been leading the charge in the recruitment of Longstreet. He went out and saw him in California shortly after being hired and Longstreet quickly became the top target at the position for the Aggies.
There were times over the past couple months where the family said Texas A&M was setting the bar.
“Coach Elko is amazing,” Longstreet has said. “His leadership. You can for sure tell what he’s trying to do by talking to the players there. They’re getting what he’s trying to do with the program.
“Coach Klein’s offense he touches all bases, pro-style, air-raid, fast-paced, he touches all those aspects.”
Longstreet’s father likes the fit as well.
“What I like about them is the leadership,” Longstreet’s father Kevin said. “Coach Elko, I can’t speak enough about him. Heck of a head coach. I like it at other places but the connection was different. What makes it a good fit as a player for Husan in particular is the rapport that Coach Klein has built with Husan and the dynamics of the offense that he’s coached from the previous schools.”
A couple visits to The Plains tightened the recruitment
Two spring visits to Auburn which first included a spring practice and then the second showcasing the atmosphere of the Tigers spring game has shown Longstreet the terrific possibilities on The Plains.
“The way they fly around in practice,” the younger Longstreet has highlighted. “I think their practices were very intense. I’m a very big believer in you practice how you play. That’s one of the biggest things for me. I like Coach (Kent) Austin and the way he can break down a defense”
“Their environment, their coaches, Coach Freeze, you can see over the past year how much has been poured into that place and its prime for a quarterback,” Kevin said. “It’s definitely a great fit. A great, great fit.”
As Longstreet has tried to narrow this thing to one, he had conversations with former Hugh Freeze quarterback Malik Willis and former Collin Klein quarterback Skylar Thompson about their college experiences. A very diet conscience family, the Auburn staff poured into nutrition on a recent visit to show Longstreet he can maintain his healthy habits as a Tiger. Who knows what little detail or inch is going to push one program to the top.
Longstreet gave the Ducks and Rebels a last-minute look
If it’s not Oregon or Ole Miss, those programs will continue recruiting him even after the decision date.
Oregon wants to sign two quarterbacks in this class and already have Akili Smith Jr. in the fold.
“Those facilities are second to none,” Kevin said. “Coach (Dan) Lanning is amazing. I think all these coaches are awesome. Coach Lanning, Coach (Will) Stein he’s awesome and down to earth. Oregon by far has the best facilities and the leadership. Their future, their vision for Oregon. To grow on what they currently have and their vision for the next year or two, it’s unbelievable.”
The Ducks will also continue trying to recruit Bear Bachmeier.
The younger Longstreet enjoyed his time at Ole Miss.
“The biggest thing for me was the QB development and support that they provide. They were very productive within the quarterback meetings and also had fun in there. That also helped bring good energy on the field at practice.”
