Day 10 SMU fall camp notebook, practice highlights

SMU Football was back on the practice field on Friday before Saturday’s scrimmage. Here’s the latest takeaways from practice as the Mustangs continue fall camp.

*** Wide receiver Jamarion Carroll was working off to the side with a trainer during practice. We don’t know what the SMU wideout is dealing with injury wise, but he’s been on the sidelines the past couple practices.

*** Running back Camar Wheaton and right tackle Andrew Chamblee remain out during practice. We’ll await an injury update from Rhett Lashlee on Saturday on the pair of offensive players.

*** Earlier this week, SMU did give center Justin Osborne an off day to rest up and reset. The Outland Trophy Watch List pick did go down earlier in fall camp and the staff has wanted to be pretty careful with him since, it appears. That said, he certainly looks the part when he’s out there.

*** Quarterback Preston Stone had a strong throw over the middle to wide receiver Jordan Hudson to cap his run of plays. Tight end Matthew Hibner continues to catch people’s eyes when you’re watching him move around blocking and in the passing game overall.

*** Linebacker Justin Medlock looks like he could be making a move in the linebacker room. He was running with what appeared to be the second team and would’ve had a tackle on a play, if they were tackling.

*** SMU’s moved around Nate Anderson a little bit in camp and that speaks to how they’re feeling about Alex Woods at guard as well. The Mustangs are trying to solidify the tackle position as far as who Garin Justice could plug in there, if players go down. Anderson was the latest to see some time there.

*** Return man Brashard Smith continues to get work at running back in practice and he had a nice run in the team period to break one loose. He’s looked the part in terms of explosiveness as he leans back into the running back position.

*** Kicker Collin Rogers met with the media on Thursday and mentioned how he’s still getting used to new holder Isaac Pearson, SMU’s new punter, but it’s huge to long snapper Will Benton IV back again for another season. SMU’s worked extensively this offseason prioritizing special teams, especially in roster construction and identifying pieces that can help. New analyst Casey Horny is assisting special teams coordinator Kyle Cooper and indications are Horny’s been a nice add behind the scenes.
