Danny Okoye discusses Tennessee trip

It was a star studded weekend on Rocky Top as Tennessee hosted a ton of top prospects in the final weekend before the dead period begins. One of those prospects was coveted edge rusher Danny Okoye, a priority target for the Vols.
Okoye (6-foot-5, 230 pounds), from Tulsa, Ok., was making an unofficial visit this weekend on a return trip to campus for him. He left impressed with what he saw.
“I just really saw a lot of informative stuff. I talked to a lot of great people,” Okoye said. “The coaches were nice, they were answering all my questions the way that I needed them too. It was a really fun time and I’m coming away with a lot more information than I had.”
Tennessee made Okoye a priority early in the process and the Vols have recruited him with some urgency from the beginning. Those efforts seem to be paying off.
Okoye has a long list of suitors and is coming off official visits to LSU and Texas. He plans on taking official visits to Oklahoma and Colorado in the fall. At the moment though, it sounds like Tennessee is at the top.
“Definitely, definitely at the top or very close to the top of my list right now. I feel comfortable saying that, because there’s no place like it,” Okoye said of where the Vols are in his pecking order of schools at the moment.
Why is Tennessee so high on his list? Okoye had no trouble rattling off what he likes about the Vols.
“Tennessee was always the favorite. Their coaches have been recruiting me harder than pretty much anybody else. Definitely after this weekend it’s definitely increased,” he said.
“It’s really just the coaching staff. They’re all people I would love to play for. There’s nobody where it’s like ‘I don’t really like him.’ Everybody comes together. It’s like a big family and I can really appreciate that.”
It was a big visit weekend for the Vols, so Okoye naturally spent time around some of Tennessee’s commitments. Understandably, the commitments are heavy into ‘peer recruiting’ and Okoye saw his fair share of it, in particularly he heard a pitch from new Tennessee commit Boo Carter.
“Me and Boo go way back. We’ve been friends. It’s cool being around people who have already made a decision, seeing how comfortable they are with it already,” Okoye said.
“They’re always like ‘C’mon man.’ I might be convinced here in a couple of months, we’ll see.”
Tennessee seems to be in a great spot for Okoye at the moment, and as things stand they’ll get a shot to close the deal with another visit during the season.
“I’m trying to commit during the season. I’m still trying to take some game-day visits to make sure my decision is 100% sure,” Okoye said of his time table.
“I’m hoping maybe around late October to early November. I’m definitely coming back to Tennessee during the season for my official.”
On3 ranks Okoye as the No. 63 overall prospect in the Class of 2024 and the No. 6 overall EDGE in the class.
