Daniel Suárez reacts to NASCAR Cup Series 2025 Mexico City race: ‘Dream come true’

NASCAR officially announced earlier this week that Mexico City will host a Cup Series race in 2025, a weekend which will be a “dream come true” for Daniel Suárez.

Suárez was present at the announcement and opened up about NASCAR heading to his home country ahead of Sunday’s Southern 500 at Darlington. Suárez admitted he was surprised by the media interest in the announcement, but emphasized how excited he is to race in Mexico City for the first time in a decade.

“Honestly, I knew the announcement was gonna be good [and] very energetic,” Suárez said Saturday, via Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. “To be very honest with you, I was not expecting to have that many people in the media in Mexico. It was impressive. I asked [NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Venue & Racing Innovations Officer] Ben [Kennedy] the same question, I was like, ‘Hey, were you expecting this turnout?’ He said, ‘I was expecting something good, but not this good.’ So, it’s exciting.

“I’m very, very happy. This, to me, is like a dream come true. Obviously, coming from Mexico and being born and raised there is something very special. The last time I raced in Mexico City was 10 years ago, so to come back next year is gonna be very special.”

Daniel Suárez ‘excited’ about NASCAR coming to Mexico City

Suárez won the 2024 NASCAR Mexico Series opener at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in February, but he last competed in Mexico City in 2014. That will change on Sunday, June 15, 2025, when the Cup Series comes to Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. NASCAR last held a points race outside the United States in 1958 at the Canadian Exposition Stadium in Toronto, Ontario.

Suárez will surely want to win this one, telling Pockrass it would mean the same as winning a championship.

“If we win that race, to me, it will be just as important as winning a championship. It will be huge,” Suárez said. “Once we get to that week, it’s just another weekend, right. But in reality, it’s gonna be tough to handle all the people and stuff pulling me in different directions. But it’s gonna be a lot of fun. I feel very grateful and thankful to be in this position. To be living the NASCAR dream in this era. I was talking to some friends like if I was 33 years old 25 years ago. In NASCAR this probably wouldn’t be an option going to Mexico. So, just very grateful.”
