Dallas Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones speaks out about restructuring Dak Prescott’s contract

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones opened up about the team restructuring Dak Prescott‘s contract. While appearing on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Jones talked about the Cowboys re-working Prescott’s contract as he continues to heal from his injury.

“Obviously we have a lot of confidence that Dak’s injury was one of those that was just unfortunate,” Stephen Jones said, per Jon Mchota of The Athletic. “…We feel like he’s gonna be a healthy, productive quarterback for us that will play at the very top of his game and give us a chance to win championships.”

The Cowboys restructured Prescott’s contract in March to save money. They created $36.6 million in cap space, converting $45.75 million of Prescott’s base salary to a signing bonus. That move reduced Prescott’s cap figure from $89.89 million to $53.29 million.

In 2024, Prescott played in eight games and threw for 1,978 yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a 3-5 record. In the Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons, Prescott injured his hamstring and missed the rest of the season.

Dak Prescott shares update on hamstring injury

Last week, Dak Prescott gave an update on his recovery. “I’m getting close to where I want to be, I don’t want to put a percentage on it,” Prescott said of his hamstring at the 35th annual Children’s Cancer Fund gala, per the Cowboys’ official website. “I know we’ve got team activities coming up, imagine myself being involved in some sort if not all. Then again I just understand my age, what I’ve had, what I’ve went through, it’s about being my best in the fall. So I’m not rushing anything, but I’m where I want to be.”

Prescott also talked about being a better version of himself once he’s 100 percent healthy. “It’s just the work that I’ve put into it, unfortunately, I’ve been through this process of recovering from injuries before that I embrace it,” he said. “I know that a better version of me is on the other side, so that’s just the way that I’ve approached this whole offseason and this whole rehab process.”

At the start of the 2024 season, Prescott signed a four-year contract extension worth $240 million. He has been with the Cowboys since joining the NFL in 2016 and has made the Pro Bowl three times.
