Dallas area WR Xavier Johnson breaks down SMU commitment

2025 North Richland Hills (Tex.) Richland wideout Xavier Johnson committed to SMU, he announced during the Pony Express weekend. Coming off the visit, he just enjoyed the entire environment that Rhett Lashlee’s staff put together.

“It was a blessing,” Johnson told On3. “It was phenomenal. I had a great time with the coaches. Overall, it was outstanding. Words can’t explain it. SMU set the bar.”

SMU wide receivers coach Rob Likens got a big commitment in the high three-star prospect, but it was a whole staff effort to reel in the Dallas area star.

“Really, all of them, that’s why this is a great school because it wasn’t just one coach,” Johnson said. “It was the whole coaching staff showing love and that means a lot.”

The push to keep Dallas’ top talent at home is a big one for Lashlee’s staff and Johnson sees the chance that a group of DFW talent puts SMU on top.

“It feels good to be with people that grew up the same time I grew up and things like that,” he said. “I feel like we can change Dallas for real.”

SMU moving up to the ACC is also a big deal in his recruitment. Johnson will have a chance to challenge for early playing time with so many departures off the 2024 roster.

“I feel like it’s going to change the game for real and we’ll be ready because ACC is competition and you only get better going against competition. So, that’ll be good.”

The Mustangs beat out the likes of Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and others.
