Coveted CB Jamir Benjamin ‘locked in’ with Stanford

West Bloomfield (Mich.) cornerback Jamir Benjamin felt Stanford was a ‘life-changing’ opportunity. He committed to the Cardinal back on Nov. 26. He plans on staying that way, though other programs are trying to convince him of his other options.

“I committed to Stanford because that was a life-changing decision,” Benjamin told On3. “You really can’t beat the degree, the education and I’m out there in California playing in the Pac 12. I’m setting myself up to be successful and putting my family in the best position.”

Benjamin has some schools still in contact, though he’s been set on not entertaining their advances. He chose Stanford over in-state program Michigan and Big Ten rival Penn State among a host of others.

Benjamin is still on the fence about whether or not he’ll take any other visits, unofficial or official visits at this point.

“I’ve got to talk to my family about it but at this point, I’m just locked in with Stanford,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin is scouring the state of Michigan for players to join him in Palo Alto. He has his eyes on a few players in particular. Benjamin was working on his teammate Kari Jackson before he committed to Penn State.

“That’s one that we really wanted,” Benjamin said. “We offered him. It’s that Wisconsin defense and they asked me who they should offer and I suggested Kari…I’m going to do my research and look into other guys that we can go get.”

Versatility is a big piece of CB’s game

Benjamin expects to play cornerback at least initially for Stanford. He doesn’t have a preference.

“They start everybody off at cornerback, but I’m versatile, I can play safety and corner,” Benjamin said. “Whatever they tell me to do to get on the field, that’s what I’ll play.”

Benjamin is well aware of Stanford’s history of producing NFL-caliber defensive backs. It also played a part in his recruitment. He’s followed former Cardinal star Richard Sherman’s NFL career.

He’s also seen Stanford turn Kyu Blue Kelly into a potential high NFL draft pick in 2023. Benjamin is a fan of Sherman’s style of play as well as Kelly’s.

“Man I’ve always watched the Legion of Boom and Richard Sherman since I was a kid,” Benjamin said. “I wanted dreads like him. He played at Stanford, so I wanted to follow in his footsteps.”
