Commitment Preview: 5-star WR Mike Matthews

Lilburn (Ga.) Parkview five-star wide receiver Mike Matthews is top ranked uncommitted wide receiver in the 2024 class.

He is set to make his commitment announcement tomorrow, July 19.

Matthews officially narrowed down his list of top schools down to Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee and USC. He will make his commitment decision live on On3’s YouTube channel July 19 at 7 p.m. ET.

The 6-foot-0.5, 180 pound standout is the No. 14 overall prospect and No. 4 wide receiver in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 3 player in Georgia.

Where Matthews Is Trending

Even with a strong push from Lincoln Riley and USC as well as Georgia and Clemson, it is the Tennessee Volunteers solidified themselves as the favorite over the past few weeks.

“Tennessee continues to be the trendy pick for the Peach State playmaker,” On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons wrote last week. “Clemson, Georgia and USC are the others on Matthews’ list. Lincoln Riley‘s offense appeals to Matthews, but distance has always been a factor. Clemson still has a level of confidence they are on this a little more than some may think. Then Georgia, an in-state school, has stayed in communication with Matthews, but the buzz is not the same around the Bulldogs as it is with the Vols.”

As it stands a little more than 24 hours out, the Vols hold an 86.7 percent chance of securing his commitment, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM).

To this time, there is only one On3 Prediction in place from On3’s Josh Newberg.

Personal Life (On3 Database)

Mike Matthews earned all-region, all-county and all-state honors in 2022 after catching 48 passes for 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also starred on defense with 23 tackles and two interceptions. Matthews is also a successful basketball player and juggles both football and basketball at the high school level. Matthews prides himself on his work ethic. “I want people to know you can always count on me,” Matthews said. “I want to be one of those guys. To be known for that rather than just being one of those five-star guys. I don’t really take breaks, even during the week. After practice, I’m always working and making extra effort. I’m about the effort and extra work.”
