COMMITMENT IMPACT: Nick Marsh commits to Michigan State

Michigan State added another big addition to its 2024 class on Friday with the commitment of in-state four-star wide receiver Nick Marsh. He announced his commitment at River Rouge (Mich.) High School with SpartanMag.com staffers in attendance.

Marsh is ranked the No. 120 overall recruit, No. 3 recruit in Michigan and No. 21 wide receiver recruit in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.

Marsh has been a top target for wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins for well over a year. He originally committed to Michigan State last July before re-opening his recruitment in March. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound wide receiver held offers from Oklahoma, Michigan, Auburn, UCLA, Oregon, Tennessee and more. Marsh took official visits to Pittsburgh (June 2), Penn State (June 9), Kansas (June 16), and Michigan State (June 23). Hawkins and the Spartans were able to close the deal on Marsh’s last June official visit.

What it means

On the offensive side of the ball, Marsh will join four-star Michigan State running back commitment Anthony Carrie of Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day, who committed on June 24. Quarterback Henry Hasselbeck of Boston (Mass.) Xavierian Brothers joined the group on June 30.

The Spartans also hold commitments from four offensive linemen. The first commitment of the o-line group came from Andrew Dennis of Mount Pleasant (Mich.) High School, who was later joined by three-star Logan Bennett of Baltimore (Md.) St. Francis, along with twins Mercer and Charlton Luniewski of Cincinnati (Ohio) Hills Christian.

The defensive group is led by the first commitment of the class, three-star cornerback Jaylen Thompson of Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Riverdale. Camren Campbell of Tampa Bay (Fla.) Tech and the versatile Justin Denson of Providence (R.I.) La Salle round out cornerback coach Jim Salgado’s room. Michigan State also holds two commitments at the defensive back position in four-star Reggie Powers of Dayton (Ohio) Centerville and three-star Syair Torrence of Syracuse (N.Y.) Christian Brothers.

How it fits

At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Marsh provides valuable length with plus speed and excellent ball skills. He earned the nickname ‘Megatron’ due to his elite ability to go up and high point the football. The four-star burst onto the field as a freshman receiver for River Rouge, playing at Ford Field in the MHSAA State Championships that year.

He backed up his freshman year success in both his sophomore and junior seasons, becoming widely accepted as a top recruit in the state of Michigan. Marsh has the elite talent and ability to see the field early for the Spartans.

The Spartans and Courtney Hawkins signed two wide receivers in the Class of 2023 in three-stars Aziah Johnson (6-2, 175) of Richmond (Va.) Thomas Jefferson and Jaelen Smith (6-2, 190) of Houston (Tx.) Klein Cain.

Michigan State signed a large group of receivers in the Class of 2022, including transfer departure Germie Bernard, who left for Washington this off-season. Former three-stars Tyrell Henry will enter his sophomore season in 2023, while Jaron Glover and Antonio Gates, Jr. will enter their redshirt freshman seasons. This young trio will be counted on to break into the playing group following the transfer of Keon Coleman to Florida State.

Michigan State also welcomes Nebraska junior transfer Alante Brown ahead of the 2023 season, who will provide another veteran presence alongside senior wide receiver Tre Mosley this fall. Mosley will use his last year of eligibility in 2023.

Marsh will look to join the roster in 2024, enrolling early with the Spartans this December. He will join both freshman receivers from the 2023 class, along with the trio from the Class of 2022, as the future of the wide receiver room.
