Auburn football has landed another transfer portal commitment from Shane Hooks, a former Jackson State receiver and Ole Miss commit.
Hooks is the third receiver added from the portal, but brings a totally different skillset from the others. Actually, he is much different than anyone in the Tigers” receiver room.
Here is everything you need to know about Auburn’s new receiver.
The Hooks File
Hooks is a 6-foot-4 205 pound wide receiver with incredible length and a wide catch-radius.
Hooks is a threat with the ball in his hands. He can go up and make tough catches with his length, but when he gets the ball in his hands, he can make people miss in unconventional ways.
Hooks is a fiery competitor that sometimes goes too far with it. Either way, his style of play is loaded with confidence and physicality at receiver.
Auburn fit
Hooks is more than likely designated to playing on the outside at receiver rather than in the slot unless there is a mismatch.
Hugh Freeze had a superstar receiver in Laquon Treadwell while at Ole Miss. Hooks is closer to Treadwell than any other receiver on Auburn’s roster currently. Like Treadwell, Hooks can do so many different things as an outside receiver. He can go deep, catch the back shoulder throws, out-man defenders, and make plays after the catch. His game isn’t limited to a certain role.
Football IQ
Hooks’ football IQ all comes from the instinct side of the equation. He is highly instinctual as a ball carrier after the catch. He almost always finds extra yardage, makes the first man miss, and finds the end zone often.
Hooks understands positioning. He is not the most polished route runner, but he knows how to create separation when being manned up. He is a tough assignment on the back shoulder throws.
One area for improvement
Hooks is a loose cannon. There is a lot of risk in taking a player with the disposition of Hooks. That’s not to say it cannot be tamed, or cannot work, but it is a risk. Hooks can be seen holding, taking cheap shots, and throwing defenders to the ground after the whistle. He has a tendency to taunt, celebrate excessively, and lose his cool on the field. If that can be controlled, Hooks can be a successful college football player, then move on to the next level.
SEC readiness
Hooks can be out of control at times as a player, but he is ready to make a splash in the SEC. He is a great talent who resembles some of the more talented, big receivers who have come through college football in recent years.
At Auburn, Hooks brings another element to the receiver room. There is a high chance for success with Hooks.
