Coin Flip Sets the Field for SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament

Coin Flip Sets the Field for SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament

The SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament field is set, but it took some theatrics to get there.

The Kentucky Wildcats tried to throw a wrinkle in the final standings. South Carolina needed a victory to end the regular season tied atop the league alongside Texas. Kenny Brooks’ squad gave ’em hell but ultimately came up short at Colonial Life Arena. A close game throughout, a late 7-0 South Carolina run was enough for the Gamecocks to pull away with a 78-66 victory.

The result took us to a new place in the world of power conference college athletics. In the era of the super-conference, not every team can play one another twice. That leads to complicated tiebreakers. This one went to the bottom of the line, forcing us to a coin flip.

Instead of gathering at a gas station, a la Friday Night Lights, Greg Sankey starred in a television broadcast on the SEC Network. South Carolina won the toss, giving the Gamecocks the No. 1 seed and Texas the No. 2.

The Kentucky women’s basketball team concluded its first season under Kenny Brooks with a 22-6 record, 11-5 in SEC play. That gives the Wildcats a double-dye as the No. 4 seed in the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Kentucky will tip-off postseason play in Greeneville this Friday at 2:30 p.m. EST on ESPN. If chalk holds, they’ll face the No. 5 seed, Oklahoma. A potential rematch with South Carolina is on the horizon if they secure an opening round win.

Kentucky won five games against Top 25 foes this season, the second-most in program history. They had zero combined over the last two years. It’d be nice if they picked up a few more this postseason.

Kentucky has only won the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament once. The seventh-seeded Wildcats pulled off a stunner back in 2022. Dre’Una Edwards buried a three with 4.2 to play to take down South Carolina at Bridgestone Arena.
