Coach’s take on Miami 2025 QB commit Luke Nickel: “He’s the sharpest football-knowledge kid I’ve ever had at quarterback”

Coach’s take on Miami 2025 QB commit Luke Nickel: “He’s the sharpest football-knowledge kid I’ve ever had at quarterback”

Just under two months ago, the Miami Hurricanes offered Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton 2025 quarterback Luke Nickel, and things have moved swiftly ever since.

After visiting Miami in late July, the Georgia gunslinger was so impressed by what he saw in Coral Gables that after he left that visit it was all said and done that he wanted to be a Hurricane, according to his offensive coordinator, Stevie Jackson.

“Since he came back from the visit to Miami, I just kept calling coach (Shannon) Dawson asking, ‘I don’t know what y’all did, because he was excited about Miami in a different way than any other place,’” Jackson told CaneSport. “They did a great job recruiting him and showing off what Miami is building towards. I think Luke matches up with those guys that coach Dawson has recently had.”

While Miami blew Nickel away off the field, the Hurricanes may have loved what he can do on the field even more. As a sophomore at Milton last season, the three-star prospect led the Eagles to 10 wins while throwing for 2,507 yards and 24 touchdowns.

According to Jackson, while Nickel has all the arm talent you want from a Power Five prospect, his best attribute is not his size or anything you can necessarily measure.

“Luke is very programable,” Jackson said. “He is the sharpest football-knowledge kid I’ve had at quarterback. He’s the most programable in the sense that if I tell him something once, I won’t have to tell him twice. You can count on what he’s going to do, and with talks with coach Dawson, I think that shined in the sense of how you separate him from other people. The best skill set of Luke Nickel is that you can guarantee what his execution is going to be. It makes it simpler to call plays, set up drives, and just the whole thing.”

When asked about Miami’s first commit of the 2025 cycle, Nickel’s head coach at Milton, Ben Reaves, raved about the poise and confidence of his second-year starter.

“Luke is a special player and QB because he has no fear,” Reaves said. “There is no moment too big, no window too tight, no game or situation too impossible to attack. He goes out with the same competitive toughness, situation after situation, game after game, and plays the position of QB the way it’s supposed to be played and leads his team the way it’s supposed to be led. There is no moment that’s too big for Luke, and that’s what separates him as one of the greats to come through here and what will allow him to continue to be successful at the highest levels.”

With one varsity season under his belt and two more to go, Reaves believes the sky is the limit for Nickel, who is just beginning to make a name for himself heading into his junior season.

“You do not get an offer to play QB at ‘The U’ unless you’re a dang good QB and have all of the tools it takes to play at a high level,” Reaves said. “The biggest attribute Miami is getting in Luke is that he’s a winner. He wins on the field; he wins in the school; he wins in the community; he wins in the locker room; he wins in the weight room; he just wins. Everything. It’s not an attribute that can be measured at a combine or Elite 11 camp, but for me as a Head Coach, I want to snap the ball to a guy that knows how to win, is used to winning, and expects to win, and that’s what Luke Nickel is about. “
