Coach’s take: Miami getting “one of the most freakish athletes you’ll ever see” in 4-star WR Joshisa Trader … with a star NFL comparison

With the Miami Hurricanes landing Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star receiver Joshisa Trader, Lions head coach Dameon Jones believes Mario Cristobal and his staff are getting one of the most dynamic wideouts he has ever coached.

“He’s a high-character kid and one of the most freakish athletes you’ll ever see,” Jones told CaneSport. “His athleticism is crazy.”

Jones, who began coaching the 6-foot-175-pound wide receiver last season, says day in and day out Trader continues to progress and rarely ceases to amaze him at practice.

“I would say his route running has improved the most, but he surprises me every day with the amazing stuff that he does,” Jones said. “Every day is a surprise with the things that he does, and you just go, ‘Holy cow’, you know?”

When thinking of a close comparison for the No. 34 prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking and the No. 9 receiver in this class, the first name that came to Jones’ mind was a fellow Miami wide receiver … as in the Miami Dolphins.

“Tyreek Hill,” Jones said. “Tyreek Hill is super fast, but he does freakish stuff, like catching the ball and making people look silly. That’s the type of player that JoJo is.”

ANALYSIS: Joshisa Trader brings bigtime playmaking to Miami Hurricanes offense

As a junior, Trader hauled in 47 receptions for 743 yards and seven touchdowns. Jones wholeheartedly believes Trader will continue to perform at a high level on Saturdays when his time comes.

“He’s electric, and he’s going to put on a show,” Jones said. “Wherever they put him at receiver, he’s going to make plays, and he’s a game changer.”

When Trader is not making highlight plays on the gridiron, he’s a vocal leader in the Chaminade-Madonna locker room who brings a competitive edge like no other in every aspect of life.

“He’s really chill in the locker room and one of the most upbeat guys,” Jones said. “He just loves to compete.”

With his decision to stay home and play for Miami over the likes of Ohio State, Florida State, Florida, and others now public, Jones is glad to see Trader at peace with his decision and focusing on his future as a Hurricane.

“I was happy for him,” Jones said. “You’ve got to realize the kid goes through a lot of pressure with the media and just the whole recruiting thing. I was just happy he finally got the weight off his shoulders. I’m happy for him. I wasn’t surprised about it; I’m just surprised he did it now because I thought he should have done it (earlier), but I’m just happy he has this weight off his shoulders.”
