Coach’s corner: Brian Rowe

Jason Seidel has been a high school coach for more than two decades and has tutored some talented players. To him, new South Carolina commitment Brian Rowe has some of the best tools that he’s seen.

“In my 23 years, he’s probably one of the best athletes I’ve ever been around,” Seidel told GamecockCentral.com.

The four-star pass-catcher’s first sport -and first love – was basketball.

“When I first met him, I told him, don’t be shocked, but I think football is going to be what it is,” Seidel recalls.

Jason Talbert has been Seidel’s receivers coach at all of his head coaching stops, and the pair mentored former South Carolina wideout Jalen Brooks at the high school level as well.

Said Seidel “We were like man, once this clicks for him, he is going to be electric.”

Rowe turned in a big year for Jay M. Robinson High as a junior. He caught 50 balls for 1,063 yards and 15 touchdowns.

“He started to figure out every game, he just was like, oh, I can do this, you know,” Seidel said. “He’s a confident kid. He loves playing against great talent. He loves the competition. So as he fine-tuned his skills, he is really special.”

Seidel noted that Rowe is still raw, and one next step for the progression is to attend a slate of seven-on-seven tournaments this summer in an effort to face some talented corners.

“It’s scary that he has another year with us, and then we’ll go on to the college level, and I can’t imagine what he’s going to turn into as he gets into that type of atmosphere where he’s got all that support,” Seidel said. “With the nutrition plan, all that stuff, he’s just going to get bigger, faster, and stronger.”

Even though Rowe’s first love was hoops, he nonetheless has taken to football and has seemed to fully embrace that path.

“He loves the game, he does play with a passion,” said Seidel. “Athletically, he can do it fast. He’s a competitor, he loves to learn, he loves to get feedback, and I think this year, it’s going to be, how can we take your game to the next level?”
