Clemson star Caden Grice details how new coaching staff is different from old one
Caden Grice has played for two different coaching staffs during his three seasons at Clemson.
Grice started his college career playing under former head coach Monte Lee — who is now an assistant at South Carolina — and decided to stick around after Lee was fired and replaced by Erik Bakich.
Needless to say, Grice is pleased with his decision.
“This is the best coaching staff I’ve ever played for,” Grice told the ACC Network on Friday. “They keep you in it, regardless. They’re not going to let you stay out of the fight. We truly believe in what they have to say and what they bring to the table. It’s really nice playing for them. They make us believe that we’re never out of the fight, and that’s what we take into every game.”
That mindset is working as Clemson is arguably the hottest team in college baseball right now.
The Tigers have won 14 consecutive games entering Saturday’s semifinals of the ACC Tournament. Clemson is 25-4 in its past 29 games, after starting the year 16-13.
Grice elaborated on what has been the key to Clemson’s success as the Tigers have gotten hot. According to Grice, not much has changed as far as in the clubhouse.
“If I’m being completely honest, winning is great, but the clubhouse was the same. I think that’s been the big key for us was just staying consistent. We were super tough,” Grice said. “You look at the games we were in, we were in them all. There was not one time where we were out of it. … We’ve just been tough, just playing our ball, competing every day, sticking to our standards and I think that’s been the big thing. We’ve stayed consistent and let everything else take care of itself.”
Up next, Clemson will play North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament on Saturday, looking to win their 15th straight game.
Grice insists the Tigers won’t treat Saturday’s semifinal game any differently than their other games. He added that he also won’t be turning to any superstitions.
“That’s one thing great about EB. We had these classroom sessions and it’s all about mental game. I think one of the big takeaways from me was superstitions are kind of the sign of mental weakness,” Grice said. “Whether that’s true for some people, it’s true for me. So sometimes I’ll do different stuff, just to break habit. So my routine tonight – I’m going to come watch some baseball, get some dinner with my family, and that’s how I’m going to get ready.”
