Clemson DT transfer Tré Williams commits to Michigan football

Michigan Wolverines football has scored a big commitment in the NCAA transfer portal, with Clemson defensive tackle transfer Tré Williams committing Saturday morning. Williams entered the portal Jan. 1, visited U-M right away and quickly made a decision.

The 6-foot-2, 315-pounder spent five seasons at Clemson and has a year of eligibility remaining.

He played high school football at Washington (D.C.) St. John’s, where he was a teammate of Michigan safety Quinten Johnson, who’s out of eligibility and headed to the NFL Draft.

He’s the No. 516 overall player and No. 34 defensive lineman in the NCAA Transfer portal, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

Over his five-year career that spanned 44 games with four starts, Williams totaled 35 tackles, 10 stops for loss, 4 sacks and 2 pass breakups.

Williams collected 14 tackles, including 3 for loss and 2 sacks, adding 2 pass breakups in 14 games this season. Williams was a backup for most of the season but did earn starts in three outings — against Stanford, Louisville and Virginia Tech.

Williams had some success as a pass rusher, notching 8 pressures. He registered a 6.7-percent pass-rush win rate, per PFF, ranking third on the team among defensive tackles with over 190 snaps. He finished the year with 3 pressures in the last three games, with 1 against South Carolina and 2 versus Texas in the College Football Playoff first round.

Clemson concluded the season 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the ACC, winning the conference with a victory over SMU. The Tigers ranked 50th nationally in scoring defense and 69th in total defense.

A leader on the defense, Williams talked this season about the group’s need to play with a high level of energy.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Williams said. “Running to the ball, talk a little junk, pick up your teammates. Offense doesn’t have a drive go how they want it — ‘Hey, [No.] 2, we’ve got you, we’re going to get you the ball right back.’ Just stuff like that, just being a good teammate. … “Just having energy, staying positive throughout the whole game.”

Williams’ breakout season came in 2021, the second of his college career. He posted 10 tackles, including 4 for loss and a sack. He followed that up with 66 tackles, including 1.5 for loss and a sack, during the 2022 season. Williams dealt with an injury in 2023, playing in only five games.

Williams is a Washington (D.C.) St. John’s product. He was ranked as a four-star prospect in the 2020 class. He checked in as the No. 107 overall recruit in the cycle.
