Chris Jones says he missed Chiefs ring ceremony due to illness

Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones sparked concerns about his commitment to the team last week when he missed the ring ceremony celebrating the Super Bowl win from February.
The star is currently chasing a contract extension, but that had nothing to do with his absence, according to the tackle himself. He cleared the air on Twitter in response to a fan’s criticism.
“I was sick,” Jones tweeted.
Jones is set to make $19.5 million in 2023 but if the team does not get an extension worked out, he’ll hit free agency next March when his contract runs out. He originally signed a deal for four years at $80 million. He signed after the Chiefs initially tried to place him on the franchise tag in 2020.
Both Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach have said they’re in touch with Jones as he held out during minicamp. It’s just a matter of getting a deal done, preferably before training camp starts next month.
“Chris wasn’t here — kind of like last year, same type of deal,” Reid told reporters. “That’s his choice. So, he chose not to be here. But I’m sure he’ll be at training camp.”
“I don’t even deal with it,” Reid added. “I let Brett and his group deal with it. If you’re there, you’re there. If you’re not, we keep going. It’s one of those deals. They’ll work all that out. They’re communicating, so that’s important.”
Last season, Jones had 15.5 sacks, with 44 tackles and 29 QB hits during the regular season.
Mahomes uses ring ceremony for clap back at Ja’Marr Chase
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had the perfect clap back for Ja’Marr Chase after the Bengals receiver downplayed his resume. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow made headlines when he said Patrick Mahomes was inarguably the best quarterback in the world.
Reporters told Chase what Burrow said, to which he responded: “Pat Who?”
Receiving his second Super Bowl ring this week, Mahomes tweeted a photo from the ring celebration with both rings on his hand a caption that read: “That’s Who.”
Chase, who is now going on Year 3 with the Bengals, unequivocally stated that his quarterback is the best in the league.
“Joe Burrow. Everybody knows that, yea. That’s easy. MVP,” Chase said.
On his way to getting his second ring, Mahomes and the Chiefs toppled Cincinnati with a 23-20 victory in the conference championship.
