CB Jaden Davis excited by both sides of the ball for Miami Hurricanes this fall: “There is so much speed on this team it’s crazy”
The Miami Hurricanes added Jaden Davis from Oklahoma out of the transfer portal this summer. And he’s worked in with the ones at nickel, competing with returning starter Te’Cory Couch there, along with working some at boundary corner.
Davis, who is from South Florida, says he is excited to play in front of his family and friends with the season just over a week away.
And he says the transition has gone well at Miami this fall.
“It’s kind of a different role (from Oklahoma), playing different positions – played primarily corner over there, playing whatever they ask here, corner or nickel. I’m ready.”
With an attacking style of defense under coordinator Lance Guidry, Davis acknowledges it’s “a different philosophy” from what he had at Oklahoma.
“Coach (Brent) Venables and coach Guidry are both smart, know what they are doing,” Davis says.
As for the depth of the cornerback room that’s added a lot of transfer portal help including Davis, Ja’Dais Richard, Davonte Brown and JUCO arrival Demetrius Freeney along with true freshman standout Damari Brown, who may start?
“The defensive backs room, we’re all like brothers, are all making each other better,” Davis said. “We’re all having fun. We’re all competing for our roles on the team, but we grew up together, a lot of Broward guys, Dade. We are all brothers – that competition, we’re making each other better every day.”
Davis’ background?
He started 22 games in his four seasons at Oklahoma, so he has experience and talent (he’s a former 4-star). But he just didn’t do real well for a Sooners D that wasn’t particularly good. Last year he had 35 tackles, 1 TFL, 2 PBU and one QB hurry. He graded out at 62.3 overall per Pro Football Focus and 60.8 percent in coverage while allowing opposing QBs to hit on 16 of 30 passes vs. him for 202 yards. Maybe a fresh start for him at Miami will be the answer, and he can be the answer for the Canes helping replace Tyrique Stevenson and DJ Ivey.
Davis says he “loves” going against the Miami offense every day, calling it a “great offense that will be very successful this year.”
Both sides are making themselves better.
“There is so much speed on this team it’s crazy,” Davis said. “The team speed is crazy. The quarterbacks always put the ball on the money. I love the way this offense functions. With a great offensive line it’s a very diverse offense.
“Colbie (Young) very big, Ray Ray (Joseph) a speedy guy, (Xavier) Restrepo – so many different body types and you can do anything you want to do with this offense (and fast guys like) Jacolby (George), Ray Ray, Brashard (Smith).”
A final takeaway from Davis?
“I’m happy to be here,” he said. “I loved my time at Oklahoma, now I’m with coach G (Lance Guidry), (Jahmile) Addai, (Mario) Cristobal and I’m doing whatever they ask me to do.”
