Catching Up With Tribe24: 4-star Amaree Williams preparing to be rare two-way player at FSU
While more than half of the 2024 FSU signing class arrived in January and participated in spring practice, another 10 Seminole freshmen are expected to arrive this summer.
Four-star athlete Amaree Williams was the last signee to join Tribe 24, and he told Warchant he is excited to finally arrive on campus later this month.
“Honestly, I’d say I am most excited about the process. It’s new,” Williams said. “It’s like any high school player — you’re leaving home, you’re going into playing big-time ball now. Definitely running out of that tunnel, hearing the warchant and all that stuff.”
When Florida State announced in February that Williams had signed, the Seminoles listed him as a defensive lineman. But the 6-foot-4, 215-pound athlete told Warchant he actually will be working on both sides of the ball.
On defense, he will be an edge pass-rusher. On offense, he will be a, “flex y-type tight end.”
Other than defensive players helping out in goal-line packages, as linebacker DJ Lundy has done in recent seasons, it has been many years since the Seminoles have had a true two-way player.
To prepare for that opportunity, Williams has been working out with South Florida-based former NFL players Andy Jones and Torrian Wilson. Jones is a former NFL wide receiver, and he has been helping Williams with his route-running, while former NFL offensive lineman Wilson is teaching him blocking techniques.
“I’ve been working with some great guys,” the four-star freshman said.
Coming from The Benjamin School in Palm Beach County, Williams is following in the footsteps of former FSU quarterback Jordan Travis and other players who went on to great success in college and professional football.
“Honestly, just trying to carry the legacy,” Williams said. “There have been numerous really good athletes, such as my guy Chauncey [Bowens] that graduated last year; Kaiir Elam, who was a first-round draft pick, and then also Jordan. Just carrying on that legacy as a Benjamin Buccaneer.”
Even though he didn’t get to enroll early and take in spring practice at Florida State, Williams did get to take in the Seminoles’ spring showcase.
“I like what they’ve been doing,” he said. “I wasn’t able to see a lot of the newer guys because some of the newer guys are out due to injury and stuff like that. But definitely been seeing the transfer portal guys getting in; they’re looking good.”
Williams said he plans to arrive at FSU around May 26-27 and is looking forward to jumping into summer workouts, as the Seminoles continue preparations for their Aug. 24 season opener in Ireland against Georgia Tech.
Playing early would be great, but the bigger focus for Williams right now is on development.
“Long-term, just bettering myself, working on my own craft every day, and then earning that starting position — whether it be offense or defense,” Williams said. “Working towards bettering myself, because at the end of the day, it’s just competition against yourself.”
