Cass Tech DB Cashus Shivers to return to Michigan State this month

Detroit – Class of 2025 Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech defensive back Cashus Shivers will return to Michigan State for the first time in three months when he visits East Lansing for Spartan Dawg Con on July 29.

Michigan State offered Shivers a scholarship the last time he was in East Lansing on April 8. When he visits again later this month, Shivers hopes to get even closer with folks in and around the program.

“I’m really looking to connect with the other recruits, especially in my class who I’m going to be playing with if I go there,” Shivers said. “That’s really what I’m looking for. (It’s) another good time to get tighter with my position coach (too).”

Michigan State secondary coach Harlon Barnett is the position coach that Shivers is closest with already. Barnett recruited Shivers and the two have gotten closer since Shivers was offered in April.

“From the jump it was really love with him,” Shivers said of Barnett. “He showed me a lot of love as soon as I walked in the building, to be honest. It’s real tight, it’s getting tighter. I don’t see it getting bad at this point. It’s only getting tighter at this point. That’s my guy, I love him to death.”

Shivers is also impressed with Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker. Shivers was offered during a one-on-one meeting with Tucker during his visit back in April.

“That’s really a good guy, in my opinion,” Shivers said of Tucker. “Like I said, he’s building a program that’s way bigger than football. He’s building his players to be actual men in life, to do something. Even if they don’t go pro, he builds them up to do something way past football. That’s what I like about him. He’s a real good guy, a real stand-up guy. He’s not going to lie to you. He’s going to tell you the truth, straight up. I love it.”

The 6-foot, 184-pound Shivers appreciates Tucker’s background as a defensive backs coach, too. Tucker coached defensive backs at five different college programs and one NFL team before arriving at Michigan State in 2020.

“(Tucker) told me he coached from Georgia to everywhere in the DB room,” Shivers said. “Him being a DB coach, that really makes me closer to him because he knows what I’m looking for and I have what he’s looking for, to be honest.”

Michigan State has recruited plenty of Cass Tech prospects over the years, given that the school has been a hotbed for in-state talent. Most recently, the Spartans received a commitment from Class of 2023 four-star defensive lineman Jalen Thompson, who played with Shivers at Cass Tech.

“That’s really my brother,” Shivers said of Thompson. “We’re real tight. We played with each other for two years, my freshman year and sophomore year. He brought me up, he taught me a lot of stuff. He’s telling me they’re really building a brotherhood. It’s a lot like Cass Tech, to be honest. Their coaches are building something. They want something for their team. It’s really more than football, it’s about what you’re going to do as a man in life. That’s really what I’m looking for.”

Shivers, a rising junior, is not yet ranked by On3. Aside from the Spartans, Shivers holds offers from Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Indiana and Louisville, among others. He has also been in contact with Oregon and Michigan.
