Carson Beck on relationship with Brock Vandagriff: ‘We talk almost every single day’

Carson Beck and Brock Vandagriff spent three seasons working together and competing against one another in the quarterback room at Georgia. Still, while the latter and backup is now elsewhere following his transfer this offseason, the former and starter continues to keep in touch with him.

Beck spoke about his current connection with Vandagriff during his appearance while at SEC Media Days on Tuesday. He said that the two of them still talk nearly each day even though they’re no longer together. He also took the chance to credit him for who he is both on and off the field.

“Yeah, me and him built a great relationship. We still do have a great relationship to this day,” said Beck to KSR’s Nick Roush in Dallas. “I mean we talk almost every single day to this point.”

“He’s a great quarterback, he’s a great athlete but an even better person,” Beck said.

Again, Beck and Vandagriff were together for the last three years in Athens. Both, with Beck having an extra year more beforehand, were backups behind Stetson Bennett in 2021 and 2022. The pair then competed for the starting job against one another as the team’s top options ahead of 2023.

In the end, Beck obviously won out with him starting all 13 games for Georgia. Over that season, he threw for nearly 4,000 yards with 24 touchdowns and six picks on 72.4% completion in helping the team to another undefeated regular season and an overall record of 13-1 after appearances in the SEC Championship and the Orange Bowl.

As for Vandagriff, he did get to appear in eight games as the reserve last fall. During his opportunities in that role, he went 12-18 (66.7%) for 165 yards and two scores.

After the season, Vandagriff elected to enter his name into the transfer portal. He did so as the No. 8 QB and No. 35 overall prospect per On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players. After just two days being available, Vandagriff decided to leave for Kentucky, a conference and former divisional foe.

Now, come kickoff, the two will meet as opponents with Beck and the Bulldogs making a trip to Lexington to play Vandagriff and the Wildcats on September 14th.

The portal allows for circumstances like these where old friends can cross again as new foes. Even so, Beck still wishes Vandagriff well in what will be his own next step for his collegiate career.

“I’m super excited to see what he’s able to do at Kentucky and looking forward to him, you know, having success,” Beck said.
