Carolina Confidential – June recruiting around the corner
Carolina Confidential – presented by Herring Insurance Services – is your home for South Carolina football and recruiting insight from Gamecock Central’s Wes Mitchell.
— The May evaluation period will soon give way to the June Recruiting Blitz, a nearly month-long grindy recruiting sprint that will help further shape the South Carolina Gamecocks’ 2024 recruiting class and beyond.
As prospects begin setting up their summer officials, it appears South Carolina will have three major recruiting weekends in June, with OVs set for the weekend of June 2, June 9 and June 23.
In addition to those three big weekends, South Carolina will, of course, host 10 sessions (the NCAA limit) of the Shane Beamer Camp.
— Chris Clark mentioned several running backs in Friday’s edition of The Insiders Forum, so be sure to check that out too and I have a few more notes there to accompany that.
South Carolina was by the school of Meridian (Miss.) four-star ATH Daniel Hill on Thursday and I believe the Gamecocks are still the favorite to land the priority playmaker.
Hill is set to officially visit South Carolina on June 24 and as of this moment, we’d project him to be one of Carolina’s two running backs in this class. Alabama and Tennessee continue to be involved here as well but Hill has, of course, publicly named Carolina his leader many times and the behind-the-scenes feedback is good too.
As Chris mentioned earlier, I don’t expect Peyton Lewis to be one of them. Lewis is now considered a heavy Tennessee lean and I don’t expect him to take his previously scheduled OV.
As I reported on Friday, South Carolina is set to host Jesup (Ga.) Wayne County three-star class of 2024 running back Matthew Fuller on an official visit on the June 9 weekend.
The 6-foot, 210-pounder is a solid all-around workhorse back who does a little bit of everything and would be a nice complement to Hill if it ends up being those two backs in the class.
Fuller has had a huge May with new offers rolling in and that should continue moving forward.
If things continue trending in the same direction there, it seems as of right now that Hill and Fuller would be the most likely duo in the class, though there are obviously other targets Carolina is involved with as well.
— Cheshire (Ct.) Cheshire Academy three-star linebacker Elijah Newby has locked in an official visit to South Carolina for June 2 as that weekend starts to take shape.
South Carolina recently offered Newby who is at Dante Reno’s new school and this will be the Gamecocks’ chance to make a move with the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder.
Newby has an official visit planned for Penn State on June 16 and there certainly seems to be some confidence on the Nittany Lions’ side that they’re the favorite here.
— Ellaville (Ga.) Schley County four-star athlete Jalewis Solomon will take an official visit to Carolina on June 2 while Statesboro (Ga.) class of 2024 four-star cornerback Kam Mikell has been added to the June 9 weekend slate.
Soloman is still working off of a pretty big list (11 schools), so it’s hard to know quite where his recruitment is headed but obviously, it’s nice for Carolina to get him in for an OV after he was also in town for the spring game.
Soloman has locked in an FSU official for June 23.
As for Mikell, he visited Georgia this past weekend and the Bulldogs will be tough to beat here for sure.
I expect Torrian Gray to have a busy month based on the number of guys already locked in and the ones I’ve heard will likely take OVs — Fuquay Varina (N.C.) four-star DB Malcolm Ziglar and Clearwater (Fla.) three-star DB Jarvis Boatwright Jr., Sandford (Fla.) Seminole DB Chasen Johnson are all both strong official visit candidates for the month.
— South Carolina offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains is expected by the school of Findlay (Oh.) class of 2025 four-star quarterback Ryan Montgomery on Wednesday.
— As you likely know by now, Savannah (Ga.) Christian Prep class of 2025 five-star defensive lineman Elijah Griffin was on campus Sunday to meet new defensive line coach Travian Robertson for the first time.
While we reported on Friday that Griffin was set to visit, this visit, and first meeting with Robertson, had actually been in the works since mere hours after Robertson started recruiting for the Gamecocks weeks ago.
We have not heard any specific feedback yet on how the visit went but Griffin already liked a lot about the South Carolina program in general, so how well he and Robertson hit it off will certainly be a major factor in if the Gamecocks are able to remain in the Top 2.
Georgia is going to be tough to beat here, but before Jimmy Lindsey left, South Carolina quietly thought it had a much better shot here than many gave them — they’ll look to continue that.
