Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon sticking with Joshua Dobbs in Week 2
Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon announced Monday that quarterback Joshua Dobbs will start again for the team in Week 2 against the New York Giants.
Dobbs was the starter for the team’s Week 1 loss to the Washington Commanders. He was 21 of 30 for 132 passing yards with zero touchdowns.
After the game, Dobbs told the media he expected to stay as the team’s starting quarterback.
“I think a huge jump is in store,” Dobbs said, via ArizonaCardinals.com. “Just getting out there, getting in the flow of a game, getting in the flow with the guys and the rhythm. Just getting out there to play ball can definitely (provide) a huge jump and I expect to make a huge jump, especially situationally.”
Dobbs was traded to Arizona on Aug. 24 from the Cleveland Browns, where he had signed in the offseason. He spent last season, which was his sixth season in the league, with the Tennessee Titans, where he started the last two games of the 2022 season.
Those were the first two starts of his professional career.
Dobbs had a chance to win the season opener but the team’s final possession of the game ended with a turnover on downs.
“I thought he did a good job,” Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said after the game, via the Associated Press. “He operated. We had a couple good drives there. Took care of the ball. The last two were unfortunate, but that’s going to happen. I thought our operation was pretty clean. He made some throws, operated well.”
The Cardinals have only two active quarterbacks on their roster in Dobbs and Clayton Tune. Tune, a rookie out of Houston, was drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Former Pro Bowler Kyler Murray started the season on the PUP list while Colt McCoy was released ahead of training camp.
Arizona will face another NFC East opponent in Week 2 in the Giants, who are coming off a brutal Sunday Night Football loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
New York got shellshocked by Dallas to the tune of a 40-0 defeat and only 171 yards of offense.
“I think we’re making a statement that we’ve been trying to make: We’re the best defense in the National Football League,” Cowboys star linebacker/defensive end Micah Parsons said after the game.
