CaneSport’s Inside the Lines with Miami Hurricanes OL Matthew McCoy: “We’re going to be really good on offense this year”

On Day 1 this fall camp, it was Matthew McCoy lined up for rep number 1 with the first team offensive line at left guard, the only position that doesn’t have a set starter. He’s battling Samson Okunlola for that coveted starting job, and the two have since been going back and forth with the ones.

Who will emerge?

That’s to be determined.

But certainly McCoy is working to put his best foot forward and earn his first starting role at Miami.

“I really just want to get myself better, I’m not worried about any teams coming up or anything else, I’m just trying to make sure I’m getting better, do what I’m supposed to do,” said McCoy, who also cross trains at RG and both tackle spots (he played LT in high school).

McCoy points to increased depth on the offensive line as bringing the whole group closer.

“We’ve bonded so well – we know what we want to do, can do with this offense. I think we’re going to be really good on offense this year, I think it’ll be a strong point.”

“We’re all working for the same thing,” he says. “We are working a lot harder – that competition is really good for us.”

There’s little doubt McCoy is talented, but he just hasn’t gotten many opportunities to this point. He redshirted in 2022 after signing as a 4-star, then this past season was used in jumbo sets in a tight ends uniform and played 29 guard reps in the bowl game against Rutgers, splitting time with Luis Cristobal, Jr. Overall he graded out at 57.7 percent in 141 reps per Pro Football Focus (65.2 pass blocking grade, 58.5 percent as a run blocker).

Now McCoy is looking for that breakout year, and says starting is “really important” to him.

“For my goals, what I want to do in the future it is important (to start),” he says.

With all the pieces in place on offense, the sky is the limit for this Miami Hurricanes attack.

“We’ve bonded so well – we know what we want to do, can do with this offense,” McCoy said. “I think we’re going to be really good on offense this year, I think it’ll be a strong point.”
