BYU forward Kanon Catchings commits to Georgia out of NCAA transfer portal

BYU forward Kanon Catchings has committed to Georgia out of the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Joe Tipton has learned. Catchings spent just one year with the Cougars.

The 6-foot-9 freshman made 15 starts in 31 appearances for BYU this season. He had a significant impact.

Kanon Catchings averaged 7.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He also chipped in 0.7 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.4 blocks per contest. He shot 35.0% from 3-point range on considerable volume (123 attempts).

Despite the fact that he made a considerable impact early in the season, though, Catchings was not as involved during the team’s postseason run. He did not appear in the Big 12 Tournament due to injury. Then he logged just nine minutes total in two NCAA Tournament games.

Catchings was battling a knee injury that he suffered in a game against West Virginia. But he was seeing reduced minutes even before that.

He recorded single-digit minutes in three of the team’s final five regular season games. At his best, though, Kanon Catchings was a real difference-maker.

He scored 23 points in an overtime win over Baylor. He also scored 21 points in a win over Florida A&M. Catchings reached double-figure scoring nine times during the season.
